FEMA accused of misusing trained disaster workers as public-relations workers

Monday, September 12, 2005

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is being criticized for misallocation of personnel in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. FEMA representatives said they requested volunteers from fire departments around the U.S., to handle its community relations campaign. However, a document FEMA sent to local fire departments asked for firefighters with very specific skills and who were capable of working in “austere conditions”. Fire departments around the nation responded by sending crews to the FEMA staging ground in Atlanta. Some of these crews were unaware that they were only going to be used for public relations work. Others, however, merely hoped that FEMA would allocate them to rescue and damage control operations once it saw their qualifications.

The firefighter’s objections are particularly poignant as one of FEMA public relations training seminars coincided with New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin plea for firefighters on national television, to relieve his own exhausted crews. It is unclear if FEMA’s request for firefighters prevented any municipalities from responding to Mayor Nagin’s request.

Some firefighters have objected to their use as FEMA public relations officers because their municipalities must bear the cost of their salaries, as well as endure reduced firefighting capacity. FEMA has stated that it sought to use firefighters to avoid background checks required of federal employees.

Firefighters began receiving their assignments Monday, September 5th. Among these was a crew of 50 assigned to tour the devastated areas with President Bush and the press.

Wikinews interviews Stephen Murphy about the upcoming by-election in the Higgins electorate of the Australian parliament

Tuesday, December 1, 2009

With two by-elections coming up in Australia, many minor parties and independents will be looking to gain a seat in the House of Representatives. Stephen Murphy is one of the independents.

Mr Murphy is a computer programmer from the Melbourne suburb of Brunswick.

“After growing up in South-East Melbourne I studied Science at Monash with first class Honours, worked in Europe for 10 years and have recently returned to Australia. I work in finance as a computer programmer and speak five languages,” Mr Murphy said.

Wikinews reporter Patrick Gillett held an exclusive email interview with Mr Murphy, candidate for the Division of Higgins.

((WN)) Why do you want to get into parliament?

Stephen Murphy: I am standing up for what I believe is the correct course of action on the biggest issue in Australian politics in 100 years – Kevin Rudd’s flawed emissions trading scheme (ETS).

((WN)) What would the three main policies you are taking into this by-election be?

SM: I will oppose the emissions trading scheme, ensure that all government policy is based on accurate scientific evidence and return common sense to Canberra

((WN)) How would you address these policies?

SM: By asking for a Royal Commission into climate change so that the facts (such as that global warming stopped in 2001 and the emissions trading scheme will not change the climate one bit) are openly presented to the Australian people.

((WN)) Sending asylum seekers to Indonesia: good or bad?

SM: Any government policy that does not properly consider all implications (be it emissions trading, or any other issue) is a bad one.

((WN)) Is the Australian dollar’s near parity with the US dollar a sign that the Australian economy is healthy, the US economy in chaos or both?

SM: It’s a sign of both. Many countries around the world look with envy at how well (relatively) Australia is doing, to our credit! It is of concern that the American economy is in such bad shape and that their levels of debt seem unsustainable.

((WN)) How do you rate the governments economic stimulus package?

SM: The economic stimulus package was poorly targeted and poorly carried out. When we could have been building roads, dams, railways and hospitals yet instead we were paying for tattoos, PlayStations and overseas holidays.

((WN)) Should it be wound back?

SM: The question about levels of stimulus spending is a complicated one and requires expertise in economics, however one could say in general terms that all government spending should be well targeted and spent in the most efficient way.

((WN)) Is Kevin Rudd a better Prime Minister than John Howard?’

SM: Australian voters are the best judge of that and we will know in 2019 🙂

((WN)) Is the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme an effective solution to climate change? Why?

SM: Absolutely not. The CPRS will not change the climate by any amount that we can measure – it’s just a new tax that will hurt Australians and drive businesses and jobs overseas. Since 2003 there has been mountains of new scientific data which contradicts the popular theory that human carbon dioxide emissions are causing significant global warming. Recently, many of the scientists who wrote the IPCC report (on which the ETS / CPRS is based) have been reported as manipulating scientific data to create scary global warming scenarios. The science is definitely not settled

((WN)) Is there a better solution?

SM: We can very easily refocus the momentum and goodwill that has been generated on climate change and channel this energy into other worthwhile environmental projects in Australia that will make a difference.

((WN)) Why should the electorate vote for you?

SM: I will oppose the ETS and support responsible environmental policies instead of radical environmental policies that could end up costing every Australian taxpayer $4550 per year in new taxes.

U.S. House rejects Senate version of payroll tax cut

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

Yesterday, the United States House of Representatives voted to effectively reject the Senate version of a bill, passed with bipartisan support, to extend a payroll tax cut two months past its year-end expiration date. The House voted instead to create a conference committee to settle differences between members of both bodies.

Although the tax cut extension itself has support among Republicans and Democrats, lawmakers disagree on how Congress should go about compensating for the cost of extending the cut and the policy changes it would entail.

During an appearance yesterday, President Obama condemned opposition to the Senate-passed version of the bill, accusing Republicans in the House of trying to negotiate on matters unrelated to the bill. Republicans, in response, say there is still time to negotiate the bill, insisting that lawmakers ought to concentrate on a year-long plan rather than a two-month extension. Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid, however, says he will not agree to negotiate the tax cut extension until the Senate-approved bill is passed by the House.

If the tax cut is not extended and instead expires on December 31, approximately 160 million Americans will be affected by the tax increase; President Obama insists the only way to prevent the tax hike beginning January 1 is for the House to pass the Senate bill. In response, House Speaker and Republican John Boehner wants Obama to “call on the Senate to return” to negotiate. The Senate, shortly after passing the bill, adjourned for the Holiday break.

Also included in the bill is a provision that would require President Obama to make a decision regarding the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, a pipeline that would transport oil from Canada to Texas.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi blamed the congressional year-end impasse on “Tea Party Republicans.” In a letter to President Obama, Speaker Boehner requested he galvanize the Senate to negotiate on the bill’s provisions, writing “The differences between the two different bills can be quickly reconciled to provide the American people the certainty of a full-year bill. There are still 11 days before the end of the year, and with so many Americans struggling, there is no reason they should be wasted. You have said many times that Congress must do its work before taking vacation”.

Shuttle launch called off due to faulty fuel tank sensor

Wednesday, July 13, 2005

The U.S. space agency NASA called off the launch of Space shuttle Discovery today after a problem with a fuel sensor in the external tank used to detect fuel exhaustion. According to the agency-run NASA TV, the low-fuel sensor was either malfunctioning or damaged. The launch was already facing the threat of a scrub due to thunderstorms in the area.

The sensor is one of four used to trigger the engine cutout after launch. Although only two are required for normal operation, and the Shuttle can be flown with one, NASA elected to maintain full redundancy. Should more of the sensors fail, the engine might burn out due to lack of fuel, a situation that has not been tested.

The problem was detected during a simulation of an empty tank. When placed in a mode simulating an empty tank, three of the sensors correctly registered that the tank was empty, while the faulty sensor stayed in the “full” state. NASA is currently unsure whether the problem relates to the sensor, the instrumentation circuits reporting the sensor’s state, or the simulation circuits.

The problem comes after a separate incident yesterday when a cockpit window cover fell from the Orbiter, damaging thermal protection tiles. A similar problem caused the replacement of the fuel tank in June. NASA described the problem as an “intermittent fault”.

The launch, which was scheduled for 3:51 ET (20:51 UTC), would have been the first launch of a shuttle since Columbia‘s February 2003 crash which killed all crew members aboard.

It is still unknown to NASA officials what caused the sensor to become defective. It is also unknown at the moment whether the issue will be fixed on the launch pad, or in the Vehicle Assembly Building – in which it takes close to a full day’s time to transport a shuttle between the two areas.

In the interim, the crew of the shuttle will stay at KSC unless there are further delays, in which case the crew might be transported back to JSC in Houston for refresher training.

Crude Oil Trading Flat

Submitted by: Trader J Howell

Crude Oil:

Oil is fractionally giving up its last week s gains on concerns that politicians in the US will not reach any decision over the fiscal cliff and as a result the US economy will slip in to a recession. Also the fiscal cliff issues are making the crude not to extend its gains for this week.

Jason Schenker, president of U.S. consultancy Prestige Economics, said, “The negative consequences of the fiscal cliff appear to be too large to ignore, and overtures from both political parties have been increasing. Significant market moves are likely when the deal gets done — or if no deal is done before the year end…. In any case, neither outcome is fully priced in.”

In Asian trading Light Sweet Crude futures for February delivery fell 0.15% to $ 90.67 on Monday. Last week oil futures added 2% for a third consecutive weekly gain. Crude’s gains were impressive in the face of fiscal cliff headlines which drove investors out of riskier assets.

Crude is supported by signs of recovery in the US economy as data in the US on Thursday about job losses came better than expected. Japan which is the third largest consumer of oil is also providing support to oil price due to the new government s determination to unleash further quantitative measures to boost the economy.

On the technical charts crude oil has just cleared the 200 day moving average and is showing signs of strength. $90.50 is acting as a strong support area and crude oil prices have the potential to rally further up to $92.50 level, where prices could face resistance.

Gold:

Gold futures rose slightly 0.32% to $1,661.25 per troy ounce in Asian trading on Monday. Gold market is also focused on the discussions surrounding the US fiscal cliff. If the congress fails to resolve the issue automatic spending cuts and tax hikes of approximately USD 600 billion each, is said to certainly drain the US GDP by 4% to 5% sending the world s largest economy in to recession. In this case investors are expected to flee risk assets including Gold and silver.

Song Seng Wun, CIMB regional economist, said, “Maybe a bit of cooling off is good. Well, they have a few hours to sort themselves. I think Asian equities are probably, at this moment, positioning themselves for a possibility that there may not be a last minute compromise of sorts.”

Gold has an important support at that 1631 dollars per ounce and that will act as a good cushion for the markets going forward. On the up side, there is some important resistance at 1700 dollars per ounce. This commodity will find difficulties in crossing that level, because this level acted as a good support for this commodity in the past.

On the technical charts Gold is making lower highs and lower lows and is in a downtrend. 200 day moving average is around $1,668 and Gold is facing significant resistance at 200 day moving average. A further slide in Gold is possible. Gold need to rise and stay above $1,690 for any bullish scenario to emerge.

Riots in Greece enter fourth night

Wednesday, December 10, 2008

The riots in Greece that started on December 6 have entered their fourth night. These are the worst riots the Hellenic Republic has witnessed in decades.

The riots were triggered when Alexandros Grigoropoulos, a 15-year-old student, was shot and killed by police. The police claim that Grigoropoulos was throwing a bomb at them when they fired.

Cities throughout Greece have been hit by the unrest, not just Athens. Hundreds of shops and businesses have been destroyed.

“No one has the right to use this tragic incident as an excuse for acts of violence,” said Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis, New Democracy party.

“The government cannot handle this crisis and has lost the trust of the Greek people,” George Papandreou of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement said. “The best thing it can do is resign and let the people find a solution … We will protect the public.”

The rioters are organizing on the campus of National Technical University of Athens (Athens Polytechnic). A constitutional clause enacted after the overthrow of the Greek military junta of 1967–1974 prevents security forces from entering the campus.

The Guardian is reporting that the University is being used by young men and women to stock up on firebombs and break up marble slabs to throw at police. From behind their makeshift barriers, they vowed the unrest would become “an uprising the likes of which Greece has never seen.”

“We are experiencing moments of a great social revolution,” leftist activist Panagiotis Sotiris told Reuters. Sotiris is among those occupying a university building. “The protests will last as long as necessary,” he added.

“A switch has been flicked and the pressure cooker’s boiled over,” said David Lea, an analyst at {{w|Control Risks Group|Control Risks Group]] in [[London}}, to Bloomberg News. “There are certain places where anarchists are more likely to inspire violence, and that’s Greece.”

Two police officers have been charged in the shooting death of Grigoropoulos, who was buried on Tuesday.

United States Senator Rand Paul’s YouTube account suspension lifted

Friday, August 20, 2021

On Tuesday, a one-week long suspension of US Senator Rand Paul’s YouTube account ended. The platform removed two of Rand’s videos, one on August 3, and another on August 10, then restricted his upload rights citing its policy against COVID-19 misinformation. Rand labeled the decision as “anti-free speech” and promoted his Rumble channel.

“We removed content from Senator Paul’s channel for including claims that masks are ineffective in preventing the contraction or transmission of Covid-19, in accordance with our Covid-19 medical misinformation policies,” explained a YouTube spokesperson to NBC, adding “This resulted in a first strike on the channel, which means it can’t upload content for a week, per our longstanding three strikes policy”.

In the first video, which was an interview shot by Newsmax, Rand quoted Anthony Fauci’s private comments from the start of the pandemic as “most of the masks you can get over the counter don’t work, because the virus particles are too small and go right through them” and added “That’s still true. They don’t work.” On August 3, after YouTube removed the video, Rand issued a press release denouncing the decision as “censorship”.

In the second video, Rand repeated the above claims and added “saying cloth masks work, when they don’t actually risks lives, as someone may choose to care for a loved one with COVID, while only wearing a cloth mask.” He referred to a 2020 Danish and a 2015 Vietnamese research paper to support his claims.

After YouTube removed his second video and restricted his account from uploading, Rand issued another press release on last Tuesday, saying “this kind of censorship is very dangerous, incredibly anti-free speech, and truly anti-progress of science, which involves skepticism and argumentation to arrive at the truth […] private companies have the right to ban me if they want to, so in this case I’ll just channel that frustration into ensuring the public knows YouTube is acting as an arm of government and censoring their users for contradicting the government”.

Per YouTube policy, the banned account could not upload any videos, live stream, or make community posts, among other things, for one week. Another violation within the same 90-day period will result in a two week suspension, and a third one in a permanent ban.

Country singer Morgan Wallen’s recording contract cancelled following use of racial slur

Saturday, February 6, 2021

On Wednesday, US country music artist Morgan Wallen was suspended from his recording contract by Big Loud Records indefinitely after he used the racial slur “nigger” in video leaked by TMZ. Wallen stated to TMZ, “I used an unacceptable and inappropriate racial slur that I wish I could take back. There are no excuses to use this type of language, ever. I want to sincerely apologise for using the word. I promise to do better.”

Republic Records, which also distributed Wallen’s music, stood by Big Loud’s decision, saying “such behavior will not be tolerated”. This decision followed the removal of Wallen’s music from some radio stations, including the largest radio station group in the United States, iHeartMedia. On Wednesday Morgan Wallen’s newly released album, entitled Dangerous: The Double Album, was at number 1 on the Billboard 200, having been at the number 1 position for three weeks.

Wallen also faced trouble on streaming services such as Spotify. On Wednesday, while his music remained available for streaming there, his songs were apparently removed from some official Spotify playlists, such as their 50 top Hot Country Songs playlist, as well as some of Apple Music’s country playlists.
