Original Story
 • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

Thursday, November 16, 2006

Buffalo, New York —A proposed hotel that was supposed to be built at the corner of Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo, New York is apparently off the table. The former proposal was going to be called The Elmwood Village Hotel and would have consisted of 72 rooms and cost between $7 to $10 million American dollars to build.

Today several unknown individuals were seen removing a sign that was dedicated to the “Elmwood Village Gateway,” which signifies the beginning of the Elmwood Village at the formerly proposed project’s location.

Nearly an hour later the men replaced the sign with a different and unexpected sign: “For Sale: 5 commercial parcels and 1 carriage house, By: Owner.” Those 5 “parcels” are 1109-1121 Elmwood and 999 Forest Avenue, which is located in an illegal alley, according to the City of Buffalo, behind the 5 other properties on Elmwood. Hans Mobius owns all properties named in the sale.

Sam Savarino, CEO of Savarino Companies never owned the properties and has repeatadly told Wikinews in exclusive interviews that he still had a “contract to buy the properties” and on October 2, 2006 told Wikinews in an exclusive interview that he “extended” the “agreement to purchase the property[s] and will have it under contract for what we hope is a sufficient period of time.”

“He [Mobius] is undoubtedly concerned because he has lost some tenants and is a bit impatient. I think he has properly portrayed the situation,” said Savarino in an exclusive interview with Wikinews.

Savarino also says that there may be “legal issues” to work out now, before anything else can move forward, regarding the proposal.

“There are some legal complexities that must be sorted out before anything can happen there,” added Savarino.

The welcome sign was; however, not removed entirely. The sign was placed, facing the same direction of north, on the side of the Forest Plaza Art Gallery, a new art gallery located on the corner of Forest and Elmwood.

Nancy Pollina, owner of Don Apparel which was located at 1109 Elmwood, but closed on October 14, 2006 considers this a possible “victory” in regards to the lawsuit filed against the hotel to stop it from being built, alleging that several laws were broken, including not performing an Environmental Impact Study before the proposal was approved by the city, during its approval and the proposal was “rushed.” Patricia Morris, who operates Don Apparel with Pollina, Angeline Genovese and Evelyn Bencinich, owners of residences on Granger Place which abut the rear of the proposed site, Nina Freudenheim, a resident of nearby Penhurst Park, and Sandra Girage, the owner of a two-family residence on Forest Avenue less than a hundred feet from the proposed hotel’s sole entrance and exit driveway, were also plaintiffs in the lawsuit. They filed the suit with a lawyer representing them, Arthur J. Giacalone, on April 25, 2006 in New York State Supreme Court, but the case has never gone to a courtroom.

Giacalone believes that a press release issued in July regarding the project was nothing but a statement to “save face,” but that the placement of the for sale sign might be a way of convincing Savarino to speed up the sale of the properties.

“I thought all along that Savarino’s July press release might be no more than an effort to save face. But we have no way of knowing. Similarly, Mobius might have put the for-sale sign up in an attempt to pressure Savarino into closing the deal. There’s no way to tell,” said Giacalone in an exclusive interview with Wikinews.

In regards to the lawsuit, Giacalone thinks it may now be in “limbo.”

“The lawsuit still sits in limbo,” added Giacalone.

Antique Desk Furniture Historical Comparison

Antique Desk Furniture Historical Comparison

by

Victor Epand

I finally realized it is not a Western desk; it is an English desk from the early 20th century. The clues are the wood itself and the hardware. English oak from this period has a distinctively different grain from the Golden Oak of American furniture of this period. The oversized hardware is also distinctly English. The odd pattern of shading was caused by someone stripping the original dark finish but giving the hardware areas a wide berth, creating the like and dark patterns in the wood as the result of really poor workmanship.

A “dresser w/desk pull down” is a 20th century recreation of a variation of the 19th century “butler’s desk”. Legend has it that the butler in an upper class 19th century household was never seen to sit. Since one of his duties was also to keep the household accounts he had to have a desk but he did not sit there. It was designed so that he could stand and do his paperwork. The desk unit was incorporated into a chest of drawers to conserve space. That piece is in fact made of maple, probably in the 1950s or 1960s. Bodart Furniture Co. was in business in Grand Rapids, from 1949 to 1973. Bodart made quality reproductions of antique European furniture forms, including desks, tables, chests and upholstered pieces. As they obviously are not in business now, you may have difficulty finding the matching chairs. But I’ll bet you can find lots of nice chairs that would match this table fine. They don’t necessarily have to be Bodart chairs. The first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony was a man known by the name of John Winthrop. Born in Surrey, England, legend says Winthrop came to Massachusetts with an original piece of furniture that instantly gained favor with the colonists: a slanted drop-front desk. After the desk became popular, it was re-named in honor of its original owner. While the story is nice, there is little truth to it. Governor Winthrop was a real man who ruled Massachusetts until his death in 1649, but this was a good 50 years before the first drop-front desks appeared in his native country. The famous curves attributed to the Gov. Winthrop style weren’t created until the mid-1700s, when Thomas Chippendale designed the first desk of this variety. Although many members of the public believe this style of furniture was named for a specific man, looking at this story from a historical perspective, it is obvious Governor Winthrop never owned the piece of furniture attributed to him. While Thomas Chippendale technically invented the design, he never labeled it as a “Gov. Winthrop,” either. The answer to this riddle rests with the Winthrop Furniture Company of Boston, who created a new model of the desk in 1924 and called it the “Gov. Winthrop.” The name is now a common part of furniture vocabulary, and has increased the popularity of other furniture of the same design, commonly known as the “Gov. Winthrop” style. Many different types of antique furniture can be found today bearing the name Winthrop due to this unique design. We installed a humidifier for the winter, which certainly helps the furniture, but summer we cannot control, as we have no AC. I am not familiar with Arizona, but I take it its very dry there, so yes putting some humidity back into the air should help. Other than that, keep all wood furniture out of direct sun and heat sources. A good paste waxing with bra wax for instance is about the only thing I can recommend to use on this piece. Apparently all pieces made with a particular type of imported mahogany carried the label you described. The desk is from the late 19th century or perhaps even the early 20th century and is part of the great “Golden Oak” period. The style is very similar overall to the famous Larkin desks of the turn of the century with the open shelf in front below the drop. It could be an American piece but the decorative motif is more European or English. Also the desk is made of flat cut oak and shows none of the quarter cut oak generally seen on American pieces of this era. The finish has been redone and it looks more recent than the 1960s.

An 18-year-old man, Travis Hawkins Jr., was charged yesterday by police in Mobile County, Alabama, for allegedly beating a woman who is romantically involved with his sister. Hawkins was bailed following a charge for second-degree assault.

Mallory Owens, 23, the victim of the attack, is in the USA Medical Center in Mobile, recovering from the injuries. Owens has had to have facial reconstructive surgery and had a broken nose from the assault during Thanksgiving. Magnitude 5.8 earthquake in Virginia felt up and down U.S. east coast, Pentagon evacuated

Tuesday, August 23, 2011

A 5.8 earthquake struck 4 miles southwest of Mineral, Virginia, 80 miles south of Washington D.C., at 1:51 p.m. EDT (17:51 UTC) and lasted for 15–30 seconds. The quake had a magnitude of 5.8 with an epicenter 27 miles (43 km) east of Charlottesville, Virginia. A 2.8 aftershock was reported at 2:46 pm EDT (18:46 UTC).

According to Twitter reports, the quake was felt inland as far as Cleveland and Toronto and along the coast from Boston to Georgia. Police sergeant James Ryan, from South Brunswick, New Jersey stated that “The 911 line is flooding with calls right now. People want to know what happened. They want to know if there was an explosion.”

The United States Capitol and The Pentagon in Arlington were evacuated, as were police headquarters and city hall in New York City. Numerous minor injuries have been reported in Washington, D.C.; however, none of them are serious. There have been confirmed reports of damage at the Washington National Cathedral and the Smithsonian Castle. The Pentagon was also damaged when a burst pipe caused flooding. The North Anna Power Station lost offsite power and had to shut down, turning to four diesel generators to maintain cooling of the facility. Both the JFK and Newark airports were briefly shut down and the control towers were evacuated. A release from Amtrak stated that trains will be operating at reduced speed, but no damage has been found on any rail lines. The Washington Metro is also operating on reduced speed, with some stations closed down, while lines are evaluated.

In Boston, it was reported that the building at 111 Devonshire Street appeared to be leaning onto the adjacent building at 50 Milk Street, with fears that it could collapse. The street was blocked off while the Boston Fire Department investigated. However, it was determined that the buildings had always appeared like that. Nevertheless, the Boston Fire Department investigated the roof and the inside of 111 Devonshire St. After 30 minutes, the building was determined to be safe.

This is the second strongest earthquake to originate in Virginia since records have been kept, after the one recorded on May 31, 1897, near Giles County, which was estimated at a magnitude of 5.9.

The Dow initially dropped 50 points after the earthquake struck, but later increased over 100 points.

What Are The Fastest Growing Economies Of 2012?

What Are the Fastest Growing Economies of 2012?

by

Cedric Loiselle

The fastest growing economies 2012 is seeing are surprisingly not the ones you would expect to show up in the list. This time United States and several nations in Europe are going through challenging economic times. But some countries have soaring economies. Not all of them are rich though.

Niger

Niger depends on other countries for economic aid. One of the poorest nations on the world suffers from droughts. Despite economic hostility, the population grows steeply. However, you will be surprised to learn that recent prognosis speak of a seemingly strong future, as Niger has expanded its resource base of gold, coal, and oil. The GDP forecast for 2012 is $7.38 billion. Niger sees a GDP growth of 15.4%.

Iraq

Economists say that Iraq is doing well. Its economy shows rapid recovery in spite of the political and social instability. The country expects a GDP growth of 10.5% in 2012. This growth comes from increased export of oil and high energy prices. The GDP forecast for 2012 is $128 billion.

Angola

Angola s GDP growth is 10.496% and its GDP forecast for 2012 is $1.32 billion. The government aims to restructure the industrial sector. With funding fro the IMF and World Bank, Angola may be able to pull off economic reforms, improve infrastructure, and enhance commerce. The country is known for its petroleum and diamonds, which make up 90% of its GDP and export.

Liberia

Unlike the previous two African countries mentioned, Liberia is well-off. Its strong relations with the United States stimulated close trade. Economic climate changed in the 1980s, but things started to do better in 2006. In 2012, the GDP growth is 10.496%.

China

It s not surprising to see China in this list. China s economic liberalization and modernization led to development. China s rise in the economic rank inspired awe among other developing and some developed nations. Today, China becomes one of the top and important trading partners of other rich nations. While the GDP growth is 9.52%, the expected GDP for 2012 is $7,209.42 billion.

Haiti

The Haiti Hemispheric Opportunity was signed in 2006 with the aim of ameliorating export and investment. This was supposed to be a good partnership with the USA, but a series of tropical storms in 2008 caused an economic setback. Then, the 2010 earthquake worsened the economic conditions. Nonetheless, these natural calamities did not stop Haiti from seeing economic boon. Expected GDP for 2012 is a little over 9 billion dollars and the GDP growth is 8.8%.

East Timor

Timor Leste boasts one of the highest economic growth rates in 2012 in spite of the challenges in infrastructure civil government, and employment. What augments government revenue is the development of hydrocarbons resources, but even this development does little to solve unemployment. Nonetheless, the 2012 GDP growth is 8.63%.

Ethiopia

The economy of this country is under the control of its government the only African government that doesn t approve of privatization. Ethiopia is blessed with fertile soil. The 2012 GDP prognosis is 32.3 billion dollars. GDP growth has been noted at 8.02%.

India

The second most populous country in the world has one of the fastest growing economies in 2012. Apparently, the large pool of talent is one of India s strengths. Moreover, the opportunities for economic growth in the coming years seem to be everywhere. The GDP forecast of $1.858.9 billion is awesome.

Mozambique

Mozambique s economy started to take a leap forward shortly before the 90s. Macroeconomic reforms today have had a positive influence on the economy. The GDP forecast for 2012 is $12.9 billion.

Second Arab-Israeli bulldozer attack in July 2008

Wednesday, July 23, 2008

Sixteen were wounded, one seriously when a Palestinian rammed a backhoe loader into a bus followed by attacks on several other vehicles Tuesday afternoon in Jerusalem before he was shot dead by the security forces. This is the second such incident in Jerusalem in three weeks. A spokesman for the Israeli police said that a civilian shot the vehicle’s driver but the bulldozer was still running. A police patrol continued shooting until the driver died.

The bulldozer driver who was, according to witnesses, wearing a large white skullcap common to religious Muslims, first hit the No. 13 bus on its side and then chased it while raising the shovel of his front-end loader, the driver managed to make a right turn and get away from the bulldozer which then went on to zig zag across the street and hit further cars until it came to a stop following the driver being gunned down.

Today’s bulldozer attack is a reminder of what Israelis have courageously lived with on a daily basis for far too long.

Speaking in Amman, United States presidential candidate Barack Obama said: “Today’s bulldozer attack is a reminder of what Israelis have courageously lived with on a daily basis for far too long. I strongly condemn this attack and will always support Israel in confronting terrorism and pursuing lasting peace and security.”

After the attack, which follows a similar attack on July 2, and the indictment of six Israeli-Arabs from Jerusalem accused of belonging to a terrorist cell, Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupolianski, said: “We should reconsider the employment of these people.”

Woman in Buffalo, New York accidentally sets herself on fire

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

Buffalo, New York —A woman in Buffalo, New York in the United States is in critical condition tonight at Sisters Of Charity Hospital after she accidentally set herself on fire.

The unnamed elderly woman was receiving oxygen for medical problems in her home and lit a cigarette, and the oxygen coming from her mask facilitated the ignition of her clothing, setting her on fire.

Despite her “severe” burns as described by firefighters on radio communications, she was still able to dial the emergency line in the U.S., 911.

In the U.S. only 4% of all residential fires were reportedly caused by smoking materials in 2002. These fires, however, were responsible for 19% of residential fire fatalities and 9% of injuries. The fatality rate due to smoking is nearly four times higher than the overall residential fire rate; injuries are more than twice as likely. Forty percent of all smoking fires start in the bedroom or living room/family room; in 35% of these fires, bedding or upholstered furniture are the items first ignited.

Erectile Dysfunction Supplement A Cure Without Side Effects!

By Alex Rocklane

Searching for a treatment for erectile dysfunction? Opting for the safest remedy? Tired of experiencing side effects? You dont need to look any further; the answers may just be in your very own kitchen!

Erectile dysfunction supplements are great alternatives as remedy for poor sexual performance. They are all-natural, thus without the risks of side effects. Furthermore, these supplements are beneficial for the bodys over-all functioning. Aside from the obvious health benefits, erectile dysfunction supplements may cost cheaper than medications.

Remember that the most common cause of erectile dysfunction is poor blood circulation, especially in the genitalia. Therefore it is important to keep your body nourished to help regulate blood flow.

Below is a list of recommended foods which can be taken as erectile dysfunction supplements:

1. Tropical fruits (bananas, kiwi, mangoes, papaya)

When plaque and calcium build up in the arteries, it causes restriction in the blood flow. Chelation therapy is an alternative method used to dissolve blockages in the tiny capillaries of the male organ

Eating tropical fruits gives your body a high level of chelating minerals and the enzyme bromelain which acts as it does in chelation therapy. It cleans up the blocked passages in the blood vessels, causing a more regulated blood flow in the body.

2. Garlic

Garlics main effect as an effective erectile dysfunction supplement is its power to stimulate and invigorate hormonal and gastric secretions. When this happens, the whole body gets revitalized, especially in the process of blood circulation.

3. Fibrous foods

Fried and fatty foods are to be avoided because they cause the arteries to get blocked. A diet rich in fiber are good erectile dysfunction supplements because it helps clean up the body from toxin buildup. Toxins blocking the blood vessels can cause erectile dysfunction. Eat as much fibers as you can, to allow healthy flow of blood throughout the body.

To get the best of a healthy lifestyle, one must also include vitamin supplements in their daily intake. But one must be careful with his/her nutrient intake, especially if suffering from erectile dysfunction because without proper knowledge, it just might cause more harm than good.

If you are suffering from ED and are cautious of the things you take in, here are some safe nutrients recommended for you to take as erectile dysfunction supplements:

1. Zinc

Zinc is a mineral essential for the production of testosterone. Adolescent boys are encouraged to take as much zinc as they can get because it helps in their sexual growth and development. Similarly, older men should not neglect their intake of zinc as it helps in the production of their sperm count.

Known as an aphrodisiac, scientists have reported that even the slightest deficiency in zinc can affect sexual performance. Apparently, zinc can be attributed to helping a person increase sexual desire.

2. B-complex Vitamins

A persons sexual urge comes as a response from the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. A deficiency in this area can cause disorders and dysfunctions in ones sexual activity. Effects range from lack of sexual desire, decreased amounts of hormones, low stamina, and erectile dysfunction.

Taking B-complex vitamins will help improve sexual vigor.

Pantothenic acid (B5)

Pyridoxine (B6)

Iodine

3. Calcium and Magnesium

Calcium is also an important nutrient in sexual functioning. It keeps the link between the brain, hormonal glands, and their mechanical processes active. But taking calcium solely as an erectile dysfunction supplement is unadvisable because without the benefits of magnesium, it will only deposit in the soft tissues and cause blockages. Magnesium acts as a calcium channel blocker and counteracts the negative effects of calcium in sustaining an erection.
