Pakistani parliament passes bill for transgender rights

Friday, May 11, 2018

On Tuesday, Pakistan’s parliament passed a bill at Islamabad’s National Assembly which granted transgender people various civil rights. The bill, “Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act”, which was presented by Pakistan Peoples Party’s lawmaker Naveed Qamar, was approved by the senate in March, and now awaits signature of the president Mamnoon Hussain.

The bill ensures people have the right to identify themselves as male, female or as “third gender”, also known as khawaja sira in Pakistan. This identity choice is to be reflected in the National Database and Registration Authority, as well as other official documents like passports and driving licence.

Per the bill, transgender people can now cast votes, run for election, have the right to assemble, and can obtain loans for business startups. They are also eligible to inherit property per their identified gender. Transgender people are to be no longer discriminated at school, working place, for medical services, public transportation facilities, by their employers, or at private business. Separate confinement areas, jails and prisons are to be established for transgenders. Anyone found guilty of forcing transgenders to beg is to face a six-month prison term as well as 50 thousand rupees fine.

The legislation was sent to and later approved by the Council of Islamic Ideology, a government advisory body. Lahore-based activist Mehlab Jameel, who was involved in writing the bill, said the Council of Islamic Ideology “appreciated that the bill included directions on inheritance in accordance with Shari’a” law.

Last year, transgenders were included for the census count for the first time. Mehlab Jameel said, “the definition of ‘transgender’ […] was basically based on genitals” in the initial draft of the bill, written last year.

Speaking to National Public Radio, Jameel said, “This kind of development is not only unprecedented in Pakistani history, but it’s one of the most progressive laws in the whole world.” Human Rights Watch has reported at least four deaths of transgenders in the country since the beginning of 2018, and at least 57 transgenders were killed in Pakistan since 2015. Pakistan’s —reportedly— first transgender news anchor and activist Marvia Malik told Images the transgenders “are forced to dance and beg because they have no other means to make ends meet.” “My trans friends who have masters degrees don’t have jobs which is why they end up on streets or become sex workers”, Malik added.

The draft for the policy to implement this bill is not yet prepared. From the date the bill was approved, President Hussain has ten days to sign the bill or reject it.

Pakistan’s intelligence agency said to support Taliban

Sunday, June 13, 2010

A report from the London School of Economics claims that the intelligence agency of Pakistan, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), has close ties to the Taliban in Afghanistan.

According to the report, the ISI actively provides the Taliban with services such as funding, weapons, and the training of troops. Additionally, the report, which is based on interviews with members of the Taliban, says that numerous ISI officials are part of the Taliban’s council of war, the Quetta Shura, although some Taliban commanders say that all Quetta Shura members have ties to the ISI. A senior Taliban official said that “[i]t is impossible to be a member of the Quetta shura without membership of the ISI.”

Taliban commanders said that the ISI has specifically provided support to or encouraged strategies such as attacking specific NATO military installations or infrastructure essential to NATO operations such as roads or bridges and assassinating specific individuals, such as high-ranking tribal officials or civilians such as doctors or teachers. The ISI is also alleged to have been the impetus behind the introduction of a type of explosive called a “plastic bomb,” which is undetectable with current NATO detection equipment.

The report said that “[a]s the provider of sanctuary and substantial financial, military and logistical support to the insurgency, the ISI appears to have strong strategic and operational influence—reinforced by coercion. There is thus a strong case that the ISI orchestrates, sustains and shapes the overall insurgent campaign.”

The Pakistani government has denied the claims in the report; a spokesperson said that “[t]he allegations are absolutely baseless.” Another official, referring to an alleged meeting of Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari with imprisoned Taliban commanders, said that “[t]here’s no such thing as President Zardari meeting Taliban leaders. This never happened.”

CanadaVOTES: NDP incumbent David Christopherson running in Hamilton Centre

Friday, September 26, 2008

On October 14, 2008, Canadians will be heading to the polls for the federal election. New Democratic Party incumbent David Christopherson is standing for re-election in the riding of Hamilton Centre.

From 1985-1990, he served as a Hamilton City Councillor for Ward Four. He was elected to Ontario legislature in 1990, defeating a Liberal cabinet minister. Under Bob Rae, Christopherson served as Minister of Correctional Services and Solicitor-General. He did not seek re-election to legislature in 2003, opting to run for mayor of Hamilton. Considered a frontrunner, he lost to Larry Di Ianni.

He returned to politics just months later, changing his focus to federal politics. Christopherson beat Liberal cabinet minister Stan Keyes, the incumbent, serving as NDP critic for cities, community infrastructure, labour and steel policy. He has served as a member of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Public Accounts, and Deputy Chair of the Parliamentary Steel Caucus.

Wikinews contacted David Christopherson, to talk about the issues facing Canadians, and what they and their party would do to address them. Wikinews is in the process of contacting every candidate, in every riding across the country, no matter their political stripe. All interviews are conducted over e-mail, and interviews are published unedited, allowing candidates to impart their full message to our readers, uninterrupted.

First elected in 2004, David Christopherson is the only MP to have represented Hamilton Centre, which was created in 2003 from parts of three other ridings. Only 38 km², small versus other area ridings, its located on the south side of Hamilton Harbour. Alphabetically, Christopherson’s challengers are Anthony Giles (Libertarian), John Livingstone (Green), Lisa Nussey (Marxist-Leninist), Leon O’Connor (Conservative), Ryan Sparrow (Communist), and Helen M. Wilson (Liberal).

Foreign investment rises in Romania by 19 percent

Thursday, August 4, 2005

Romania’s level of foreign direct investment rose by 19% in the first six months (January-July) of 2005 when compared to the same period of 2004, according to the Romanian Agency for Foreign Investment (ARIS). The country recorded US$750 million of foreign investment in this period, and 56 total investment projects, in comparison to 40 projects between January and July 2004. The majority of the investments occurred in the Bucharest–Ilfov region, which includes the Romanian capital.

The rise in foreign investment is mainly attributed due to a more liberal taxation policy introduced by the Romanian government on January 1, 2005, which centres around a 16% flat tax on personal income and corporate profit. Additionally, the country’s expected membership of the European Union in 2007 and its relatively stable political climate also led to an increase in foreign investment in 2005.

Is There Money To Be Made With Development Of I Phone Apps ?

Is there money to be made with Development of iPhone Apps ?

by

Mabel Jane

There is a lot of buzz about independent iphone developers who have made between $100,000 to $500,000 by simply creating their first iPhone application and putting it up for sale on the online Apple Store.

Steve Demeter made a simple puzzle game called Trism, and in 2 months he earned $250,000. Last December the app called iFart became the number one app on the App Store. It stayed on the top and raked in $9200 each day in profit after Apple’s cut. Then, Ethan Nicholas, developer of the now famous iShoot game, earns $21,000 per day selling his iPhone app. Ethan quit his day job to work full time on the iPhone and he did not even know how to write Objective-C code before he made iShoot.

These are just some of the stories that are causing a lot of buzz, and people have quit their day jobs to cash in on the opportunity.

The guys who create things like this know its a “fad” with a steep bell curve. They can easily revive it every 10 to 15 years to milk it further. Lets not take credit away from them for thinking outside the box. Who would’ve thought of iPhone Apps like iFart, iSteam, Ocarina, iBeer, Koi Pond, Moron test, iFight, etc ? These are simple Apps that the creators have made for bite sized entertainment and a quick (million) bucks. They recognize the opportunity (iphone platform + micro-transaction ability) and are selling stuff for 99cents and making a killing doing so.

The good news is that the party is NOT over. There is still plenty of room for innovation and you are still seeing individual and small studious making a killing creating and marketing what you term above as “stupid”.

There is a LOT of money to be made IF you do this the RIGHT way. Like in all businesses / ventures .. you need to get it right. That is the secret.

So, i’m going to share a few pointers. Firstly, its very important to have a free version of your app along with the paid version (keep it at 99 cents). You must follow this pricing pattern for fad type of products, but not if you are making a hgh utility product like a Astronomy Star Map.

You are not late to the party on the app store, but there are many people already there who know what is working. So, you need to play your cards right or you will get frustrated and have to walk out of the game. Spend a lot of time seeing the apps on the store. There are a LOT of them. DONT copy or make twists of what exists. Come up with a truly UNIQUE name. Ofcourse you need to have a UNIQUE game concept / gameplay too (if you are making a game). If you are making an App – there’s so much you can do.

About buying a Mac for development … no you do NOT need to buy one. If you sign up at EDUmobile.ORG classes – you get remote access to Mac time. Also, there’s an easy way to create the emulator on a dual core. Just look around . I wont tell 🙂

If you want to eventually self-publish your iPhone app via the Appstore – then you need the official SDK and acceptance by the folks at Mac and it costs $100. You will need to buy a real Mac to sign your app and publish it when you are ready. Alternatively, go for a co-publishing deal with the guys at EDUmobile.ORG and you get to keep 80% of the revenues coming in 🙂 not bad. No hassle.

Finally, again i must repeat – there is $$$ to be made – but you need to go about it in a clever manner and the folks at EDUmobile will give you plenty of tips once you graduate, and also access to a private forum to discuss things that are working with other developers like yourself. Ofcourse, if you want to start earning immediately – you can bid to win the large number of mushrooming iPhone project listings on sites like Elance, oDesk and RentACoder. When I checked recently there were over 25 iPhone projects being posted per day on Elance and oDesk, individually!

What You Will Learn In The iPhone Tutorials at EDUmobile

Xcode and Interface Builder: Xcode is the latest IDE from Apple and is used to create native applications for Mac OS and iPhone. Interface builder is used to create interfaces and used them directly in used your application. You’ll learn how to use both of them to create state of the art applications from scratch.

Intro to Objective-C: Objective-C is the object-oriented programming language used by Apple for all its development and you will have to learn it to write iPhone applications. We will teach you all important concepts you need to know to program for iPhone. This course assumes negligible knowledge of objective c and will deal in: classes, objects, properties, message sending, memory management, the Foundation classes, and so on.

Cocoa Touch: It is an API for building software programs to run on the iPhone and iPod Touch from Apple Inc. Cocoa Touch provides an abstraction layer of the iPhone OS, which is the operating system for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Cocoa Touch is based on the Cocoa API toolset for building software programs for Mac OS X computers. You will learn the important aspects of cocoa touch programming to conceive and develop innovative applications for it.

View Controllers: View controllers are the hub of the MVC design. You’ll learn how to create controller outlets, write actions, and wire them up to the user interface in NIB files.

Tab bar controllers: You’ll learn how to use navigation and tab bar controllers to improve the user experience. Various applications can be created using tab bar controllers and is must for iPhone programming.

Congressman Cunningham admits taking bribes

Monday, November 28, 2005

U.S. Representative Randy “Duke” Cunningham (R–CA) pled guilty today to conspiring to take bribes in exchange for using his influence as a member of the House Appropriations Committee to help a defense contractor get business. In total he pled guilty to one count of income tax evasion and four counts of conspiracy, namely mail fraud, wire fraud, bribery of public official and accepting bribes. U.S. District judge Larry A. Burns scheduled Cunnigham to be sentenced on February 27. He is facing up to 10 years in prison and nearly $500,000 in fines, as well as forfeiture of unspecified amounts of cash and property.

In the court hearing, Cunningham admitted to accepting “bribes in exchange for performance of official duties” between “the year 2000 and June of 2005”, taking “both cash payments and payments in kind” and following up by “trying to influence the Defense Department”.

The federal investigation against Cunningham was triggered by his sale of his California residence to defense contractor Mitchell Wade in late 2003. However, Wade never moved in and sold the house at a $700,000 loss three quarters of a year later. At the same time Wade’s company MZM won tens of millions of dollars in defense contracts. Subsequent investigations discovered more questionable business transactions, including interactions with the defense contractor ADCS. In his plea agreement he testified that, among other charges, he “demanded, sought and received at least $2.4 million in illicit payments and benefits from his co-conspirators in various forms, including cash, checks, meals, travel, lodging, furnishings, antiques, rugs, yacht club fees, boat repairs and improvements, moving expenses, cars and boats.”

Cunningham announced his resignation after the hearing. In a written statement released by his law firm O’Melveny & Myers LLP he declared “The truth is — I broke the law, concealed my conduct, and disgraced my high office. I know that I will forfeit my freedom, my reputation, my worldly possessions, and most importantly, the trust of my friends and family.”
