Chihuahuas: Urban Legends And Myths About The Breed

by

John P Jackson

Urban legends are also known as folklore, often these tales are concocted by people of a bygone time period who have tried to offer up explanations about the unexplained. Some of these mythical tales and stories still exist and linger on, even today. There are several stories that surround different dog breeds, Chihuahuas included.

Chihuahuas Cure Asthma and Allergies:One such legend for Chihuahuas hails from Mexico, which states the dogs have an uncanny ability to transfer the illness of the owner to itself and thus freeing the owner from such illnesses as allergies and asthma. This legendary folklore resurfaced in America where Sandra Billitz of Warrior, Alabama, states she bought a Chihuahua with the strict intention of having the dog cure her mother of asthma.Bigchihuahua.com disputed the claim that a Chihuahua can cure or lessen the effects of asthma, even though Ms. Billitz stated that it cured her mother. Devoted Chihuahua owners commenting on the site claimed that their Chihuahuas truly cured or lessened the symptoms of their asthma. However, Bigchihuahua.com backs up their statements by citing there is no specific information to lend credence to this claim. Many possible explanations exist because of the way a Chihuahua owner feels pure love, “the power of faith, belief and suggestion.” Also since a Chihuahua can either have a smooth or longhair coat, it is possible that a smooth coated Chihuahua owned as a family pet, can produce less dander and other airborne allergens which can be triggers for asthma and allergies in some people.Chihuahua Being Swept Up By a Hawk:Occurring in Manhattans Bryant Park, this incident happened when a tourist had her pet Chihuahua on a leash and saw a trained hawk, who was part of the recreational program of the park, swoop down and carry the dog away in its sharp talons. Apparently, the Chihuahua ended up being released and suffered only minor injuries. No proof was offered to back up these claims that a tiny Chihuahua was almost a meal for a trained hawk. The hawk more than likely believed the animal to be a rat or other vermin. Officials at the park have since taken extra precautions to prevent something like this from happening. They are continuing their hawk recreational program, which was implemented to get rid of the pigeon population in the park. The program has been a success and park officials say they are not going to get rid of the program because of one small mistake.According to David Emery of “Your Guide to Urban Legends and Folklore,” this hawk story should be considered a “near myth.” Emery also states that it could become a real urban legend if the Chihuahua had not been tethered to a leash at the time.Nonetheless, an urban legend still exists where a small pet like a Chihuahua is commonly being caught and snatched up by birds like hawks, pelicans and other large birds. Most likely, it is a coyote who would hunt down a Chihuahua and other small animals.A Tourist Buys a Chihuahua Which is Really a Rat:Another story widely reported on the internet was that a couple from America purchased a Chihuahua to bring home with them. It turns out the dog was strange looking, but the buyer reassured them it was really a Chihuahua. Once the couple returned to the states, their veterinarian confirmed that they had actually purchased a hairless, Mexican sewer rat. There are several versions of this story circulating around, some have stated the dog was a stray and the couple took a liking to it, others have said the dog was close to drowning and was rescued. Still other sources state that the vet confirmed the animal was a number of different species of rat; Korean, Chinese and Guatemalan are just a few. Other variations of the story claim that the hairless rat was allegedly dying by the time it reached a veterinarian. Again, like all the other stories, this one is also an urban legend.

Anonymous people reveal animal cruelty at Australian Inghams poultry producer factory using CCTV footage

Thursday, March 21, 2013

Anonymous people submitted a video depicting employees of Inghams Enterprises, an Australian poultry producer, to Animal Liberation. The video displays animal cruelty at an Inghams plant in Tahmoor, Macarthur Region, south-west of Sydney. The video was recorded without the employees’ knowledge over a two-week period in February. Animal Liberation maintains that the footage is legitimate.

Spokesperson for Animal Liberation Emma Hurst stated to Sydney Morning Herald, “You can see a total disrespect of these animals. There are scenes where they’ve put the music up very, very loud, the workers are screaming, jumping about, dancing, picking up the turkeys, dancing while holding onto the turkeys, throwing them onto the shackles, and just that whole mentality as though these animals don’t have feelings, that they’re objects.”

Using CCTV, over 140 hours were recorded, depicting 136 incidences of animal cruelty as well as aggravated animal cruelty, resulting in the animals’ death or severe conditions. Ms. Hurst said, “Hanging upside down, their legs are already brittle, and we’ve got footage as well where their legs have actually ripped off from their bodies … and the legs have been tossed around.”

Animal Liberation and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) are again calling for the mandatory installation of CCTV cameras in all Australian abattoirs. RSPCA New South Wales chief inspector David O’Shannessy told the ABC that surveillance and inspections of abattoirs should be commonplace in Australia. “The CCTV would certainly send a strong signal to those people working with animals that their welfare is of the highest priority.”

Inghams CEO Kevin McBain released a statement saying that an investigation had been launched into the “intolerable incidents”. “We condemn the animal abuse we have seen in the footage and will — as a matter of urgency — work to review, retrain and reinforce our animal welfare standards throughout our organisation”

The New South Wales Police and the New South Wales Food Authority are continuing to investigate the video.

US Representative Elijah Cummings dies at age 68

Friday, October 18, 2019

Early yesterday morning, United States Representative Elijah Cummings died while in hospice care. Cummings, the Democratic chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, was 68.

Elijah Eugene Cummings, first elected to Congress in 1996, was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1951. His parents, Robert Cummings Sr. and Ruth Elma Cummings, were sharecroppers. In grade school, Cummings expressed intent to become a lawyer. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in political science from Howard University, he attended law school at the University of Maryland. Cummings passed the state bar exam in 1976, and went on to start his own law practice.

In 1982 Cummings successfully ran to be a state delegate, joining the Maryland General Assembly in 1983. He remained there for fourteen years, eventually serving as the speaker pro tem of the chamber. Cummings was the first African American to hold that office.

When Representative Kweisi Mfume of Maryland’s seventh Congressional District announced his resignation in 1995, Cummings joined the race to replace him, winning the election. He went on to serve in the House of Representatives for twenty three years. He was among the Representatives who voted against the Iraq War in 2002, and in 2003 and 2004 served as the chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. He was also a member of the United States House Select Committee on Benghazi.

Following Democratic victories in the 2018 midterm elections, Cummings became the chair of the House Oversight and Reform Committee. In that role, Cummings oversaw the committee’s impeachment inquiry into President Trump, alongside the House Foreign Affairs and Intelligence committees.

The Baltimore Sun reported Cummings had been sick and was missing from Capitol Hill; his last roll call vote was on September 11. At 2:45 a.m. local time (0645 UTC), his office said, he died at Gilchrist Hospice Care. In a statement, Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, his wife and the current chairwoman of the Maryland Democratic Party, said Cummings “worked until his last breath”.

In response to Cummings’s death, Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, ordered the Capitol’s flags be lowered to half staff. Flags at the White House were reportedly similarly lowered.

Politicians from across the political spectrum publicly mourned Cummings’s death. Democrat Chuck Schumer, the Senate minority leader, told MSNBC Cummings “was a great man,” while Republican President Trump noted his “strength, passion and wisdom” on Twitter.

Representative Carolyn Maloney, the most senior Democrat on the Oversight and Reform Committee, has stepped into Cummings’s role as the committee’s acting chair. As of yesterday evening, the process to select the next permanent chair had not yet been announced, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Under Maryland state law, Republican Larry Hogan, the current governor, has until October 28 to release plans for a special election to fill Cummings’s congressional seat.

John Reed on Orwell, God, self-destruction and the future of writing

Thursday, October 18, 2007

It can be difficult to be John Reed.

Christopher Hitchens called him a “Bin Ladenist” and Cathy Young editorialized in The Boston Globe that he “blames the victims of terrorism” when he puts out a novel like Snowball’s Chance, a biting send-up of George Orwell‘s Animal Farm which he was inspired to write after the terrorist attacks on September 11. “The clear references to 9/11 in the apocalyptic ending can only bring Orwell’s name into disrepute in the U.S.,” wrote William Hamilton, the British literary executor of the Orwell estate. That process had already begun: it was revealed Orwell gave the British Foreign Office a list of people he suspected of being “crypto-Communists and fellow travelers,” labeling some of them as Jews and homosexuals. “I really wanted to explode that book,” Reed told The New York Times. “I wanted to completely undermine it.”

Is this man who wants to blow up the classic literary canon taught to children in schools a menace, or a messiah? David Shankbone went to interview him for Wikinews and found that, as often is the case, the answer lies somewhere in the middle.

Reed is electrified by the changes that surround him that channel through a lens of inspiration wrought by his children. “The kids have made me a better writer,” Reed said. In his new untitled work, which he calls a “new play by William Shakespeare,” he takes lines from The Bard‘s classics to form an original tragedy. He began it in 2003, but only with the birth of his children could he finish it. “I didn’t understand the characters who had children. I didn’t really understand them. And once I had had kids, I could approach them differently.”

Taking the old to make it new is a theme in his work and in his world view. Reed foresees new narrative forms being born, Biblical epics that will be played out across print and electronic mediums. He is pulled forward by revolutions of the past, a search for a spiritual sensibility, and a desire to locate himself in the process.

Police in Texas arrest man eating dead girlfriend

Monday, January 7, 2008

Christopher Lee McCuin, 25, from Tyler, Texas in the United States has been arrested after police found him possibly preparing to eat the body parts of his dead girlfriend, Jana Shearer aged 21. He was also charged with stabbing his ex-wife’s boyfriend, William Veasley, 42.

According to reports, Shearer’s mother was told by McCuin to “look in the garage” where she discovered the mutilated body of her daughter. She then flagged down a police officer on the road.

McCuin called 911 after the mother left the house. According to reports, he told the dispatcher that he was boiling Shearer’s body parts and preparing to eat them. When police got to his home, they discovered one of Shearer’s ears boiling in a pot, and an unnamed piece of her flesh on the kitchen table, with silverware placed beside it. The rest of her body had several “chunks” missing from it, according to the Tyler Morning Telegraph quoting Sheriff J.B. Smith of the Smith County Sheriff’s Department.

Police later found out that McCuin had stabbed his ex-wife’s boyfriend, and also broke into Tyler Custom Openings, a local business, sometime on Friday or Saturday. He started by going to Shearer’s home on Friday January 4 to have a discussion with her, but she was never seen alive again. Before stabbing Veasley, he beat Shearer “with a blunt object, multiple times” to death. On Saturday morning, he arrived at his ex-wife’s home and fought with Veasley, stabbing him. He is currently in critical condition at a local hospital.

McCuin then broke into the Tyler Custom Openings and then went to his mother’s house where he took her to his home to show her what he had done. Although McCuin was inside the house when police arrived, he was able to escape and was chased for a short distance before being caught again.

McCuin is currently being held on a US$2,000,000 bail at Smith County jail.

Six bomb attacks kill 95 in Baghdad

Thursday, August 20, 2009

According to Iraqi police, at least 95 people have been killed and half a thousand wounded after six explosions in Iraq’s capital of Baghdad on Wednesday.

Eyewitness reports say that two main attacks targeted the finance and foreign ministries. Police sources say that the blasts, which were caused by vehicles filled with explosives, all took place within several minutes.

Major General Qassim Atta, spokesman for the national armed forces’ operation in the capital, said that “a truck bomb went off near the Salhiyeh intersection and it caused casualties and a number of civilian cars were destroyed. We accuse the Baathist alliance of executing these terrorist operations.”

As a result of the attacks, Iraqi prime minister Nouri al-Maliki called for a security review. “The criminal operations that happened today no doubt call for a re-evaluation of our plans and our security methods to face the terrorist challenges,” he said.

The attacks are the deadliest in Baghdad since June 24, when 62 people died after a bomb on a motorcycle detonated.

Disney theme parks to rid trans fats internationally

Thursday, October 25, 2007File:Entrance of Disneyland Paris.jpg

Walt Disney Resorts in Paris, Hong Kong, and Tokyo will eliminate trans fats from all food served at the parks by 2009.

This move comes in addition to ridding foods of trans fats at Disneyland in California and Walt Disney World in Florida, by the end of this calendar year. The American parks began to take action a year ago, as a response to nutritionists. Healthier options such as low-fat milk and baby carrots have been added to the menu, to increase guest choices.

Disney Consumer Products has already licensed the company’s brands to healthy prepared food products in Canada, via Sobey’s grocery stores’ Compliments label, while Tesco supermarkets will start offering similar foods next month.

As concern over childhood obesity grows, many companies are taking steps to cleanup their act, and gain the trust of customers. Trans fats have been linked to coronary diseases.

Potty Training Complete Know How Of The Process

Submitted by: Potty Trainingart

Parenting, as gleeful as it sounds, can get frustrating during the course of time your child grows. With growth, there are numerous things that come along with it and need to be taken care of. One ingredient that becomes most wanted during the growth stage is Patience . As parents we tend to run out of it very often when it comes to handling our kids. This especially applies during the potty training period with your toddlers. At many times we are unable to take the tantrums, screams, stubbornness and adamancy of not being able to sit on the potty, etc.

So how do we handle them? Do we just give in to their tantrums and put them in diapers until they agree? No, definitely not. Read along to know how to handle potty training for your toddlers. Well the first and foremost thing that comes to a parent s mind is what is the right age to start the training process?

Well though kids start understanding only by the age of 2 or some by 2 1/2 where in they become fit enough to understand instructions both physically and emotionally, many parents start off at a very early age. As a parent, when you are able to observe your toddler and see a time pattern for potty use, you can start potty training by taking him/her to the bathroom right on time. This practice will slowly create awareness in the toddler s mind too and they would automatically get instinctively trained as they grow. This would save a lot of hassles as a parent for you when they come to the age of 2 or so and also save your time and energy of changing soiled diapers.

However complete awareness of independently using the toilet would only come in by the age of 3 or maybe 4 irrespective of how early one starts off with potty training methods with their toddler. Now as a parent you should first get to know what does not work when it comes to training your child for the potty.

1) Be sure that your child is ready to start potty training. Never be in a rush to start off early. You can observe your child s activities to decide the right time to start. Some of the clues that you get for when to start are when he/she has developed any of the following habits:

Regular and soft bowel movements

The ability to pull down pants

Copy other s bathroom habits

Demonstration sounds at the time of bowel movement like change of features, squatting, grunting etc.

Follow instructions and can convey the urge through words

2) Start at the right time when you are or the child is not stressed by other things.

3) Never push or bully your child when it comes to training for the potty. Remember it takes time.

4) You are not going to achieve anything by punishing your child for it instead would worsen things. Keep your patience and maintain your cool.
