Chicago’s Sears Tower renamed Willis Tower

Friday, July 17, 2009

On July 16, 2009, the largest skyscraper in Chicago, Illinois was officially renamed Willis Tower. Willis Group Holdings became a major tenant of the building in March, 2009. As part of the deal whereby they agreed to lease 140,000 square feet of the building, they were given the naming rights to the tower, which had been known as the Sears Tower since its opening in 1973. It is the largest skyscraper in the United States and was for a time the largest skyscraper in the world; though it has since been surpassed.

Sears, Roebuck and Company owned the building from its conception until it sold it in 1994. It is currently owned by American Landmark Properties of Skokie, Illinois. Sears had mostly moved out of the building by 1992, and closed its last offices there by 1995. However, they retained the naming rights until 2003. Since no deal had been worked out to rename the building by that date, it retained the Sears Tower name until Willis Group Holdings negotiated the naming rights as part of their lease on the building. The naming rights did not cost Willis any additional money, and they will retain those rights until at least 2024.

Willis Group Holdings is a London-based insurance company, incorporated in Bermuda. They are leasing 140,000 square feet of the building at a rate of $14.50 per square foot, and are consolidating their five Chicago-area offices to the new space.

Though lettering on the building had been changed on July 15, the official change did not occur until July 16, during a private ceremony involving 500 Willis employees and invited guests. The date and time name change was kept quiet until the actual lettering was changed, though the change was anticipated for several months. The tourist areas to the building, which includes a 103rd floor observation deck, will retain its current name, Skydeck Chicago.

The renaming has received some criticism from columnists in local papers, such as the Chicago Tribune, as Willis has almost no name recognition in the Chicago area. Several local residents have expressed their displeasure in the renaming, including one who started the website www.itsthesearstower.com. Chicago Historical Society senior curator John Russick has stated of the name change, “The Sears Tower has been an icon here for the last quarter of a century. For the generation that grew up calling it the Sears Tower, it’ll be hard for people to shift and start calling it something else.”

Monday, March 30, 2009

First becoming famous in her native Ukraine in the 1990s, long-haired self-described “AmazonRuslana gained international recognition for winning the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest with her song “Wild Dances,” inspired by the musical traditions of the Hutsul people of the Ukrainian Carpathian Mountains.

In the five years since, Ruslana has decided to use her name and public status to represent a number of worthy causes, including human trafficking, renewable energy, and even the basic concept of democratic process, becoming a public face of Ukraine’s Orange Revolution and later serving in Parliament.

Currently, she is on an international publicity tour to promote her album Wild Energy, a project borne out of a science fiction novel that has come to symbolize her hopes for a newer, better, freer way of life for everyone in the world. She took time to respond to questions Wikinews’s Mike Halterman posed to her about her career in music and her other endeavors.

This is the fifth in a series of interviews with past Eurovision contestants, which will be published sporadically in the lead-up to mid-May’s next contest in Moscow.

White Light Or Blue Light Teeth Whitening

By Jason Scott Edworthy

Something that people often ask is what is the difference between the blue light and the white light teeth whitening systems so here we try and help you understand.

When whitening the teeth the powerful combination of the teeth whitening gel, the lamp (blue or white)! And the oxygen can transform the colour of the teeth in a very short period of time, well around one hour to be more precise.

This is why the light based teeth whitening systems are very popular because of the short time period they whiten the teeth and this makes this system very appealing to many people and the results are instant so no waiting around.

Now the light does play an important part because it applies some gentle heat in to the area of the teeth which allows the whitening to happen much more quickly than without any light being used to whiten the teeth.

The colour whether blue or white does not really matter that much. The power of the light is more important as a strong light will emit more light and heat and make the oxidisation process even more efficient resulting in whiter teeth.

Sometimes though having really strong whitening gels and really powerful whitening lights will result in sensitivity and the gel will get deep in to the pores and aggravate the nerves and this is what creates the pain. Generally speaking the sensitivity will be gone in three to four days but the whiter teeth will last for much longer!

After whitening the teeth will appear much whiter in colour and this can help you in so many ways in our everyday lives. This will range from smiling to a stranger in the street to meeting old friends and the whiter smile makes us look healthier and more attractive as well.

When having laser teeth whitening treatment for the first time you will need to keep your expectations open as not everyone gets teeth that looks like the famous Hollywood stars they might see on the big and small screen as many of these will have veneers or will have teeth whitening done regularly and stay on top of the staining. First timers will get a big lift but for very deep stains it can take a little while to really brighten the teeth.

Teeth whitening of any kind is no substitute for good dental health care and requires you to keep seeing the dentist every six months. Sometimes we see the teeth look white and healthy and we think well my teeth and gums look and feel ok so i wont bother to see my dentist or take the – it isn’t broken so don’t fix it mentality and prevention is better than cure with the teeth!

So after you now sport a white beaming new grin what is next? Keeping the grin. You will need to have periodic laser top up treatments to keep the teeth looking white and keep the staining away and help maintain that smile!

Gay Talese on the state of journalism, Iraq and his life

Saturday, October 27, 2007

Gay Talese wants to go to Iraq. “It so happens there is someone that’s working on such a thing right now for me,” the 75-year-old legendary journalist and author told David Shankbone. “Even if I was on Al-Jazeera with a gun to my head, I wouldn’t be pleading with those bastards! I’d say, ‘Go ahead. Make my day.'”

Few reporters will ever reach the stature of Talese. His 1966 profile of Frank Sinatra, Frank Sinatra Has a Cold, was not only cited by The Economist as the greatest profile of Sinatra ever written, but is considered the greatest of any celebrity profile ever written. In the 70th anniversary issue of Esquire in October 2003, the editors declared the piece the “Best Story Esquire Ever Published.”

Talese helped create and define a new style of literary reporting called New Journalism. Talese himself told National Public Radio he rejects this label (“The term new journalism became very fashionable on college campuses in the 1970s and some of its practitioners tended to be a little loose with the facts. And that’s where I wanted to part company.”)

He is not bothered by the Bancrofts selling The Wall Street Journal—”It’s not like we should lament the passing of some noble dynasty!”—to Rupert Murdoch, but he is bothered by how the press supported and sold the Iraq War to the American people. “The press in Washington got us into this war as much as the people that are controlling it,” said Talese. “They took information that was second-hand information, and they went along with it.” He wants to see the Washington press corp disbanded and sent around the country to get back in touch with the people it covers; that the press should not be so focused on–and in bed with–the federal government.

Augusten Burroughs once said that writers are experience junkies, and Talese fits the bill. Talese–who has been married to Nan Talese (she edited James Frey‘s Million Little Piece) for fifty years–can be found at baseball games in Cuba or the gay bars of Beijing, wanting to see humanity in all its experience.

Below is Wikinews reporter David Shankbone’s interview with Gay Talese.

How To Prepare Young Children For A Dentist Visit}

How to Prepare Young Children for a Dentist Visit

by

Jordan Rocksmith

Going to the dentist is scary even for many adultsbut you don’t want your child to be afraid of the dentist, do you?

In order to get your kids to cooperate, it’s a good idea to start taking them to dentists in Irving, TX, or a town near you at a young age. You can also help little ones understand what will happen by playing dentist at home without making it seem scary. It’s also important for them to brush their teeth before going. Finally, you should visit the dentist regularly with your kids to help them establish a good relationship with the dental staff.

Take Them When They’re Young

An infant will probably not sit still in the dentist chair. Nevertheless, it’s not a bad idea to take your child as soon as they have their first tooth. A dentist visit at this age can help you understand what it means to take good care of your baby’s teeth. Your dentist will answer any questions you may have about how to get your child to brush their teeth, how to prevent cavities, and when to come to the dentist.

If your child is older and hasn’t been to the dentist yet, then it’s a good idea to start as soon as possible. Don’t wait until your child has a cavity to take them to the dentist, because you want them to associate only good things with dentists. In either case, your child probably won’t undergo any treatment at the first visit, in order to help them establish a good relationship with the dental staff.

Play Dentist at Home

Young children love playing pretend games. Instead of pretending to be doctor and patient, you can pretend to be a dentist. You can use a baby doll or a stuffed animal and pretend to examine their teeth. Then you can ask your child to do the same. You can also let your child examine your teeth or reverse roles. However, you should refrain from doing anything that might seem scary.

Don’t Scare Little Kids

Some dentist visits require the use of local anesthesia, but you shouldn’t talk about that with your younger childit will just scare them. The same is true for drilling or removing teeth.

Your child might not even notice drilling because pediatric dentists often rely on laughing gas to ensure their patients stay oblivious to what’s going on. And that’s fine. When they get older, you can explain what’s happening, but preschoolers don’t benefit from getting too much information.

Brush Their Teeth Beforehand

Before you leave the house, it’s time to brush your child’s teeth. You can brush your teeth alongside them to encourage them to participate. If you have to feed your child before your appointment, then you can also brush their teeth again at the doctor’s office. The important part is to teach your child early that it’s not polite to visit a dentist with food residue in your mouth.

Go to the Dentist Regularly

Ideally, you should take your kids to the dentist for checkups twice a year. The more often you go, the easier it will be for your dentist to detect cavities before they get too big. Going to the dentist regularly also helps your child establish a trusting relationship with the dentist and their staff.

Most dentists in Irving, TX, and around the country do everything they can to make the dentist visit fun for the little ones. They may give them stickers or cool toothbrushes or prizes for keeping their teeth healthy. And all of this helps young kids to establish a routine of visiting the dentist regularly to keep their teeth healthy throughout the rest of their lives.

Al Sharpton speaks out on race, rights and what bothers him about his critics

Monday, December 3, 2007

At Thanksgiving dinner David Shankbone told his white middle class family that he was to interview Reverend Al Sharpton that Saturday. The announcement caused an impassioned discussion about the civil rights leader’s work, the problems facing the black community and whether Sharpton helps or hurts his cause. Opinion was divided. “He’s an opportunist.” “He only stirs things up.” “Why do I always see his face when there’s a problem?”

Shankbone went to the National Action Network’s headquarters in Harlem with this Thanksgiving discussion to inform the conversation. Below is his interview with Al Sharpton on everything from Tawana Brawley, his purported feud with Barack Obama, criticism by influential African Americans such as Clarence Page, his experience running for President, to how he never expected he would see fifty (he is now 53). “People would say to me, ‘Now that I hear you, even if I disagree with you I don’t think you’re as bad as I thought,'” said Sharpton. “I would say, ‘Let me ask you a question: what was “bad as you thought”?’ And they couldn’t say. They don’t know why they think you’re bad, they just know you’re supposed to be bad because the right wing tells them you’re bad.”

New Jersey real estate investor charged with $2 million theft

Friday, March 20, 2009

The owner of a New Jersey real estate investment firm has been charged with using $2 million of his company’s money for construction at his home and other projects not related to work.

Gary Klein, owner of the Asbury Park-based REI Group Inc., surrendered himself to police after a Monmouth County grand jury indicted him on one count of theft by deception charges.

The charges were the result of a three-year investigation into his practices. Klein, 45, of Colts Neck Township, faces up to 10 years in state prison if convicted. Klein was released Friday after posting $75,000 bail.

Klein attracted clients by telling them he would invest their money in projects that would result in returns of 12 and 85 percent. Prosecutors said the actions mirrored those of a Ponzi scheme.

Robert Weir, Klein’s attorney, said the operation was not a Ponzi scheme, but legitimate business investments that went bad as the economy declined. Weir also said Klein hired a receiver to try and return the investors’ money once the investments started to go sour.

“It’s a shame that a business that experienced a turn in the real estate market is now being treated as a criminal problem. That was not Mr. Klein’s intent,” Weir said to The Star-Ledger.

Weir said the investments were used for building rehabilitation projects in Asbury Park and the construction of Florida condominium complexes, but authorities said Klein used the money to repay earlier investors who were cashing out, as well to help build his own home.

Do You Have The Millionaire Mind?

By Pat Marcello

Wow!

I just finished reading T. Harv Eker s Secrets of the Millionaire Mind. I searched for the book and couldnt find it in our bookstores, so I went to Amazon.com and got a copy. I was astounded when the book arrived-in a dust jacket, signed by the author.

OK. Im an author and I sign a lot of books, but when I see signed books from other writers, I really treasure them. I have a whole shelf, but I digress. I really want you to know what a great book Secrets of the Millionaire Mind is. It teaches you to think in a whole new way.

According to Eker, were all programmed as children with attitudes about money. If our mothers said to us, We cant afford it, we tend to go through life with that imprint. Or, we don’t think were worthy of becoming wealthy. But there are many other scenarios. They all come down to one idea-we have to open ourselves up to the possibility of money. We have to welcome it and EXPECT it to come to us and it does.

Seriously.

I tested this over the past few weeks since I read the book, and maybe its just coincidence, but Ive made more money this month than usual-a lot more. AND, I expect it to continue. Im just here waiting for it.

Here are some quotes from the book that I found most fascinating:

Leaders earn a heck of a lot more money than followers.

Theres nothing wrong with getting a steady paycheck, unless it inerferes with your ability to earn what youre worth. Theres the rub. It usually does.

Rich people believe You can have your cake and eat it too. Middle-class people believe Cake is too rich, so Ill only have a little piece. Poor people dont believe they deserve cake, so they order a doughnut, focus on the hole, and wonder why they have nothing.

I dont know if T. Harv Eker is a genius, but he certainly understands more than just whats on the surface. You can work hard, pour your lifes blood into your passion, but if you dont proceed with the intention of getting all that you can, youll continue to live hand to mouth until you die.

Pffft!!! to that. Buy the book, and I guarantee that youll come away with the same feeling as I did. Perhaps youll have a power month, too, which will lead you to another and another. These affirmations are awesome. Just try them for a month, and I know you’ll agree.

‘Rock and roll never dies’: Italy wins Eurovision after 30 years

Tuesday, May 25, 2021

On Saturday, Italy won its third victory at the Eurovision Song Competition, held this year at the Rotterdam Ahoy arena in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The Italian rock band Måneskin’s song Zitti E Buoni won 524 points from public and professional judges. French singer Barbara Pravi’s song Voilà received 499 points, and Swiss singer Gjon’s Tears Tout l’univers got 432 points; finishing second and third respectively.

Out of 39 countries participating this time, 26 countries including hosts Netherlands and the Big Five — France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom — competed in the finals. The competition began on May 18. Three of the Big Five, and the hosts finished at the very bottom of the vote ranking. Netherlands got 11, Spain got six, Germany bagged three and the UK received zero points. All four received zero points from the audience.

Dutch singer Duncan Laurence won the 2019 edition of Eurovision in Tel Aviv winning 498 points for his song Arcade. That victory meant Netherlands was to host the competition 2020, which was cancelled because of “escalating spread of COVID-19 throughout Europe”. This year, 3500 people were in audience, multiple reports stated. They all were tested negative to be eligible for attending the event, Eurovision stated.

Iceland’s Daði Freyr could not perform live in both semi-finals and the final, having tested positive of the virus. A pre-recorded performance of Daði og Gagnamagnið was played, which finished fourth, receiving 378 points, 12 more than Ukrainian singer Go_A’s song Shum.

Switzerland finished at top, during the jury voting, receiving 267 points. France finished second during the national jury voting with 248 points. During the jury voting, when France and Switzerland were very close to each other, Pravi said, “I think it is crazy that two French songs are on the top, thank you!”

National juries of both Switzerland and the UK awarded 12 points to France. Pravi uttered “Merci!” ((fr))French language: ?Thank you!, clapped and blew a kiss towards the Swiss team, upon receiving 12 points from the Swiss jury.

Italy received 318 points from the audience, putting them on top. That sufficed them to win the competition. Upon winning, Måneskin’s lead vocalist Damiano David said, “We just want to say to the whole Europe, to the whole world, rock and roll never dies.”

As the winner of this year’s competition, Italy is to host next year’s Eurovision Song Competition. Italy had previously won Eurovision in 1990. Måneskin is the first band to win the competition since 2006, the BBC noted.

Australia: Wikinews interviews David Liebelt, South Gippsland local election candidate

Monday, September 27, 2021

Since June 2019, the people of South Gippsland Shire, located at the southernmost tip of Australia, have been without a local council, after a state government inquiry found “high levels of tension” within the council. Administrators were appointed by the Victorian state government in July 2019, who have governed the shire since then. However, South Gippsland’s council is scheduled to be restored with an election to be held via post from October 5–22, 2021.

Wikinews interviewed one of the candidates standing in this election, David Liebelt, an independent candidate running in the Coastal-Promontory Ward. The Coastal-Promontory ward covers towns such as Venus Bay, Waratah Bay, Yanakie, Foster, Port Welshpool, and Toora, and elects three councillors to the South Gippsland Shire Council.
