Wikinews interviews Anda Banikos, local council candidate in South Gippsland, Australia

Wednesday, September 15, 2021

Since June 2019, the people of South Gippsland Shire, located at the southernmost tip of Australia, have been without a local council, after a state government inquiry found “high levels of tension” within the council. Administrators were appointed by the Victorian state government in July 2019, who have governed the shire since then. However, South Gippsland’s council is scheduled to be restored with an election to be held via post from October 5-22, 2021.

Wikinews interviewed one of the candidates standing in this election, Anda Banikos, an independent candidate running in the Coastal-Promontory Ward. The Coastal-Promontory ward covers towns such as Venus Bay, Waratah Bay, Yanakie, Foster, Port Welshpool, and Toora, and elects three councillors to the South Gippsland Shire Council.

Mlambo-Ngcuka sworn in as South African deputy president

Friday, June 24, 2005

Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka was sworn in as deputy president of South Africa Thursday becoming the first woman ever to hold that position. Other Cabinet members applauded as she was sworn in to office in Cape Town. Her appointment comes after former deputy president Jacob Zuma was sacked after being accused of corruption relating to a bribery scandal.

She stated that she will perform much the same function as Zuma, namely “looking after the second economy”, HIV/AIDS issue, and other assignments President Thabo Mbeki give her. “I will be looking after women and youth,” she also said.

Mlambo-Ngcuka, a former school teacher, travelled to Geneva, Switzerland to work with the YWCA. She returned to South Africa in 1987 and assumed a leading role in the Ecumenical Action Group and other anti-apartheid groups. She was later elected to parliament and appointed deputy trade and industry minister.

In 2003 she publicly accused Jacob Zuma of corruption, though the case was never formalized due to insufficient evidence. Her husband, former national director of Public Prosecutions Bulelani Ngcuka, investigated Zuma and concluded that prima facie evidence of corruption existed.

Individuals opposed to her appointment accuse her of involvement in the transfer of large sums of taxpayers’ money to the African National Congress‘ election fund through an oil company. Her brother, who asserts that the transaction was completely above board, has been implicated in South African news reports.

Cheap Bridesmaid Dresses

Submitted by: Vikaas Malhotra

The term cheap bridesmaid dresses does not necessarily indicate their poor quality. Like brides dresses, bridesmaid dresses need to have the desired quality to match the profile of the bride and her family. A bridesmaid gown is much cheaper than the bridal wear, you know. They have less embellishment than those added in the bridal costume, so naturally they weigh less and are cheaper. Even, the fabric of the bridesmaid dresses can be cheaper compared to that of the bride s gown. All of these changes do make the bridesmaid dresses cheaper while maintaining the desired quality.

There are a few things to consider while picking the bridesmaid dresses for your friends. Most important of them is to find a design that goes well with all body types. It s evident that all your friends are not of the age and do not feature similar body types, so it s impossible for you to select the costume that suits each of them individually. For this reason, many brides opt for designs that are the most common and suit all types of women- petite, fat, tall, dark or beautiful.

Most of your friends are likely to say no to puffy shoulder pads. This style has become almost obsolete. Most girls prefer the sleeveless gowns or those with straps on the shoulders, not sleeves. Similarly, avoid choosing dresses that have the large butt bows. These types of dresses make the butt area more prominent, which most women don t prefer. Also, avoid choosing light colors for your bridesmaid dresses unless it is very essential. Women with light skins do not get prominence in pale colors. Also, light color merges with the wedding dress of the bride (usually white shades) well, making the bride look immersed in them. On the contrary, the darker bridesmaid dresses will create a perfect contrast with the bride s dress, giving both the bride and her bridesmaids prominence on the wedding platform.

Different types of wedding gowns available include the Ball Gown, Column Dress, A-line dress, Mermaid, Bias Cut, and Empire Line. These silhouettes can be chosen for bridesmaid dresses as well. If you are confused as to which type to choose for your bridesmaids, fix an appointment with a designer and discuss the requirements of your bridesmaids with him or her. They will get you the best dresses for your bridesmaids in the most affordable manner.

Sales of Jackson songs and memorabilia rise after his death

Saturday, June 27, 2009

The death of Michael Jackson on Thursday has caused retail demand for his songs and for memorabilia to increase.

Yesterday, the top nine selling items at Apple’s iTunes Store were albums by Jackson, with first and second being a “hits” album and the 1982 album Thriller.

Amazon.com similarly reported selling more Jackson merchandise in the 24 hours following his death than it had sold in the preceding 11 years, and that sales of Jackson CDs accounted for 60% of its total business on Thursday. Yesterday morning the top seller in the album chart for Amazon’s U.K. division was Off the Wall, followed by Bad and Thriller in second and third places, respectively.

Many stores, including Graywhale CD Exchange in Salt Lake City, several record stores in Danville, Virginia, and many retailers in New Zealand, have all reported selling out of Jackson’s CDs and DVDs. The flagship store of Tower Records Japan, in Shinjuku, sold out of several of Jackson’s DVDs and ran low on several other items including CDs. The Danville Register Bee recommended to its readers that if they had record players they should investigate antique and charity shops, after one antique shop reported discovering three Jackson Five vinyl albums in its basement.

The effect of the increase in sales had an effect on stock prices. Midday yesterday, Apple shares rose around 2%, Amazon shares rose around 1.3%, and eBay shares rose by 0.64%. Stock market analysts predict that this will be a short-term effect, however. Scott Fullman, an investment strategist at WJB Capital Group in New York, stated “This is going to be one of these events that will have an immediate impact and then wane out in a week or two.”.

In Las Vegas, 21 items of Jackson memorabilia, including handwritten lyrics for Jackson’s song “Bad” and the shirt that Jackson wore on his Victory Tour in 1984, sold at auction yesterday at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino for a total of USD$205,000, with the shirt, at USD$52,500 the most expensive individual item.

eBay has reported an increase in individuals auctioning Jackson memorabilia. These range from records to a Fedora hat signed by Jackson.

Also for sale on eBay and elsewhere are tickets to the This Is It concerts, at the O2 arena, where Jackson had been scheduled to perform. Ticket sellers such as Ticketmaster, Seatwave, and AEG Live have announced that they will be refunding concert tickets. But under standard contract law such refunds only apply to the original purchasor of the ticket, who dealt with the ticket companies directly. Anyone buying a ticket on eBay only has recourse against the seller on eBay that they bought from, and even then only if it was explicitly stated in the terms and conditions of the particular eBay sale that a refund was available.

At the 2009 Glastonbury Festival, stalls have been selling commemorative T-shirts to Festival attendees, with various different slogans including “Michael Jackson R.I.P 1958–2009” and “I was at Glasto 09 when Jacko died”. T-shirt vendors also appeared outside of the UCLA Medical Center where paramedics took Jackson, proferring for USD$10 T-shirts with the slogan “in loving memory of Michael Jackson” and a silhouette of Jackson, although they had few takers.

In Union Square in New York, one street artist was selling hand-made buttons that have pictures of Jackson’s album covers on them. In Times Square, another T-shirt vendor was selling T-shirts printed with copies of the front page of USA Today that reported Jackson’s death.

One observer, Allison Southwick (a Better Business Bureau spokeswoman), commented “I’m honestly expecting to see a Web site pop up by the end of the day selling Michael Jackson commemorative plates.” Whilst such commemorative plates have yet to appear, collectors have been offering commemorative stamps of Jackson for sale on eBay and elsewhere. Several commemorative stamps of Jackson already exist. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines issued $5, $2, $1, and 60¢ Michael Jackson stamps in 1985, as part of its Leaders Of The World series. Tanzania issued a 350s stamp, part of a Famous Black Entertainers set, in 1990. Guinea issued a 500f stamp in 1991. St Vincent issued another $2 Jackson stamp in 1991, as part of Famous Entertainers series. And Grenada issued a 60¢ Jackson stamp, part of its Gold Record Winners series in 1992.

Gore Vidal once remarked of the death of rival Truman Capote that it was a “good career move”. The death of an artist does serve to increase the popularity of their works. People have speculated whether this will be a temporary or a permanent thing for Jackson.

Jim Lentz, who is the Chief Operating Officer of American Royal Arts (a memorabilia dealership in Boca Raton), asked “Is he Elvis or Marilyn Monroe, or is he Mike Tyson?”.

Elvis Presley died at 42, officially of heart failure. Stores sold out of his records and souveniers within hours of the news of his death. In the 20 years following his death, RCA Records sold approximately 400 million of his recordings.

In the days and weeks immediately following Presley’s death, RCA had to sub-contract pressing to other companies, as it was unable by itself to keep up with demand. Sony Corporation announced yesterday that it had received “unprecedented” levels of orders for CDs of Jackson’s music, and was considering boosting production. It had received 150,000 orders for CDs at its music unit in Tokyo. “The amount is unprecedented for one day and we think we need to consider increasing the production of CDs that we plan to sell from July.” said a spokesman for the company. Amazon has been informing customers buying Jackson CDs that they might have to wait between 1 and 3 weeks for their orders to be shipped.

Violence at Cronulla Beach as 5000 people gather

Monday, December 12, 2005

Cronulla Beach in Sydney, New South Wales was the scene of racist mob-violence yesterday. In what has been described as disgusting, un-Australian and shameful behaviour, participants in a 5000-strong mob assaulted people suspected of being of Lebanese origin. The angry, alcohol-fuelled crowd also turned on anyone who tried to help the victims, including police, security guards and ambulance officers.

Following an attack on two lifeguards earlier in the week, allegedly by men of Lebanese descent, a protest had been organised via text messages and a small number of usenet postings.

Sutherland Shire Mayor Kevin Schreiber says inflammatory text messages calling for revenge attacks fueled the violence. Mr Schreiber said the heavily-circulated messages ensured troublemakers went to the southern Sydney beach looking for a fight. Police had patrolled the area all weekend after text messages began circulating among the community calling for vigilante responses to unwelcome visitors on the beach.

“The sending out of that text message was foolish and irresponsible and ensured that people from all over Sydney came to Cronulla looking to cause trouble and this was further fueled by alcohol,” said Mr Schreiber.

Sydney’s popular talk-back radio station 2GB also promoted Sunday’s event. Breakfast announcer Alan Jones has been accused of “fanning the flames.” Callers who recommended vigilante action were not discouraged to take the law into their own hands. Mr Jones, notorious for inflammatory comments, repeated the text message for Cronulla residents to defend their territory several times.

As the crowd marched along the beach and foreshore area, waving Australian flags, the crowd chanted racist slogans, with many wearing clothes bearing racist sentiment.

Middle Eastern men were openly targeted and assaulted. A young Muslim woman wearing a veil was chased into a kiosk on Cronulla beach. Police tried to move her away from the chanting crowd but were unable to reach the security of the command post. While the woman and police officers hid in the kiosk, a crowd surrounded the kiosk and shouted “Kill the Lebs”, while others climbed on top of the kiosk.

As police horses and special operations officers formed a line and pushed the crowd away, they were bombarded with beer bottles. After half an hour, an ambulance arrived at the kiosk and people were loaded into it. The ambulance, transporting six injured youths, escorted by police and police horses, was also bombarded with beer bottles. One struck an ambulance officer on the head. His colleague suffered lacerations to the arm.

Canadian MP crosses from Conservative to Liberal party

Sunday, May 22, 2005

Belinda Stronach, Canadian MP for Newmarket-Aurora crossed the floor from the Conservatives to join the Liberals just days before a scheduled confidence vote in the Liberal government. She was immediately rewarded by being appointed to the cabinet as Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister responsible for Democratic Renewal.

“I’ve been uncomfortable for some time with the direction the Conservative party was taking,” Stronach said. “I regret to say that I do not believe the party leader is truly sensitive to the needs of each part of the country and just how big and complex Canada really is.”

She disagreed with the party on its stance on the federal budget, same-sex marriage, and Conservative leadership’s alliance with the separatist Bloc Québécois to bring down the government.

Two days after Stronach switched parties, the ruling Liberals won a crucial vote for their budget by a single vote. If Stronach had not joined the Liberals and voted for the budget, the government would have fallen, forcing a new federal election.

Nutrition For Muscle Building}

Submitted by: Troy Van Spanje

What To Eat For Lean Muscle Gain And Fat loss

Macronutrients and Their Importance

Macronutrients are an essential part of your diet. What are macronutrients? Macronutrients arent as complicated as they sound theyre just nutrients that your body requires in large amounts. These nutrients provide energy or calories.

The three macronutrients include:

Proteins Proteins provide four calories per gram

Carbohydrates Carbs provide four calories per gram

Fats Fats provide approximately 9 calories per gram

The body needs all three of these macronutrients, as well as water and micronutrients (which well talk about later) to function optimally.

Lets take a closer look at each macronutrient and how you can figure out the right balance of each macronutrient to optimize your muscle gains.

The Role of Proteins in Muscle Building

Protein plays an important role in muscle building because the body uses proteins to construct all body tissues. Your body uses proteins to help repair muscles after a tough workout, which is why its so important to get enough protein. Its also essential to make sure that youre eating the right kind of proteins.

All proteins are made up of amino acids. Certain amino acids can be made by the body, while others cannot. Your body doesnt need the amino acids it can make on its own. However, the amino acids that the body cant make must be taken in through your diet. The body must have all the essential amino acids in order to repair or build tissue.

Proteins are broken into two categories:

Incomplete Proteins Incomplete proteins do not contain all of the essential amino acids and these proteins generally come from non-animal sources, such as nuts, veggies, and beans.

Complete Proteins Complete proteins contain all of the essential amino acids, and they generally come from animal sources.

A way to calculate your protein needs to make sure that approximately 30% of your calorie intake comes from protein.

Whole Eggs Whole eggs offer an excellent amount of protein and eating whole eggs makes sure that you get all the nutrition found in the egg yolks. One egg contains about 7 grams of protein and 70 calories, making it easy to add a lot of protein to your diet without adding a huge amount of calories. Here are a few ways to add whole eggs to your meals:

Dice eggs into salads

Make an omelette for breakfast

Boil the eggs

Make a meat, potatoes, and egg hash brown

Make your own egg protein cupcakes with egg, cheese, and diced meat.

Beef Beef offers plenty of protein, iron, creatine, vitamin B12, zinc, and other essential nutrients that aid in muscle building and fat loss. Beef comes in many differ forms, including stakes and ground beef. Add it to your meals by:

Making hamburgers

Making tacos with ground beef

Stir fry with veggies

Season and eat a nice steak

Whey Protein Isolate Enjoy whey protein isolate in your meals by:

Making whey protein shakes

Adding a scoop to your oatmeal

Take it on the go with a shaker and add liquid for a quick protein meal on the go

Chicken Chicken is also a protein start, offering a low-fat way to consume protein. It also contains magnesium, iron, vitamin B12, and vitamin A. Youll get 26+ grams of proteins in a 3oz chicken breast for only 142 calories. Great ways to use chicken in your meals include:

Top a salad with cooked strips of chicken

Make healthy chicken strips

Spice up chicken with a salsa and sour cream sauce

Grill chicken and glaze with a fruity glaze or BBQ sauce

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RJygAU7uNQ[/youtube]

Salmon Salmon is rich in protein and omega-3 fatty acids, making it a great choice for a muscle building diet. It also provides important vitamins, such as vitamin D, vitamin B3, and vitamin B12. Use salmon in your diet by:

Making salmon tacos

Glazing and baking the salmon

Grilling salmon

Flaking salmon and cooking with pasta in a garlic sauce

Add flaked salmon to a salad

Other great sources of protein include:

Greek yogurt

Liver

Shellfish

Milk products

Tuna

Turkey

Sardines

Carbs for Muscle Building

Its important to eat enough carbs each day to make sure your body has plenty of calories to use for energy. This ensures that the protein you eat is left to support the growth and repair of muscles.

Carbohydrates come in two different groups:

Complex Carbs Complex carbs take longer to digest and they contain more nutrient, such as important fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Since these carbs are digested more slowly, the body enjoys a more stable release of energy

Simple Carbs Simple carbohydrates are carbs that are quickly digested. This often leaves you feeling hungry, which may make you start eating more than you should. Simple carbs also lead to spikes in blood sugar. Its important to limit simple carbs, such as sports drinks, sodas, white breads, pastries, etc.

About 40% of your calories should come from carbs when youre focusing on lean muscle building. Grains, beans, and vegetables offer a great source of complex carbs. Some of the best nutrient dense carbs to add to your diet include:

Barley

Oatmeal

Whole wheat bread, tortillas, and pastas

Oat bran

Beans

Sweet potatoes

Shredded wheat cereal

Brown rice

Wild rice

Asparagus

Tomatoes

Cauliflower

Spinach

Broccoli

Capsicum

Zucchini

String beans

Brussels sprouts

Onions

Fats for Muscle Building and Fat Loss

You also need fats to achieve your muscle building goals. Many people make the mistake of trying to avoid fasts when theyre working to build muscle. Even if your goal is fat loss and muscle gains, you still need to consume enough fat. Fats are essential to your body, and certain types of fat are essential for muscle growth, muscle recovery, joint health, brain function, and more.

Fats come in three main groups, including:

Saturated Fats Saturated fats are fats that generally come from animal sources, such as meat, eggs, and dairy products. Some people think that saturated fats should be avoided, but you dont need to completely eliminate saturated fats. Consuming both saturated and unsaturated fats can help you maintain high testosterone levels, making it easier for you to gain muscle.

Unsaturated Fats Unsaturated fats generally come from vegetable sources and they are known as good fats because they help to raise your levels of good cholesterol. Some unsaturated fats even have the ability to reduce your risk of heart disease. Some excellent sources of unsaturated fats include nuts, fish, and vegetable oils, such as olive oil.

Trans Fatty Acids Trans fatty acids are a type of fat that you do want to avoid as much as possible. They have the ability to raise bad cholesterol while lowering good cholesterol levels.

How much fat should you have on a daily basis? Approximately 25-30% of your calorie intake should come from fats. However, since youre focusing your efforts on muscle building and fat loss, you do need to focus on your fat intake on healthy fats that will improve muscle growth. Great foods and oils that offer you a great source of health fats include:

Coconut oil

Olive oil

Flaxseed oil

Brazilian nuts

Peanuts

Almonds

Walnuts

Cashews

Pistachios

Pecans

Fatty fish

Peanut butter (as long as its not high in sugar)

The Importance of Micro Nutrients

Although macronutrients are required in large quantities, you also need to take in small amounts of micronutrients to support your muscle building and fat loss efforts. What are micronutrients? Micronutrients are parts of food sources that dont offer caloric energy, yet they still perform many different physiological duties and are essential to maintaining good health.

Micronutrients include:

Vitamins

Minerals

Important Vitamins and Minerals Your Body Needs

Do you know what vitamins and minerals your body needs? Heres a list of essential vitamins and minerals that your body needs:

B Complex Vitamins

oB1 (thiamin)

oB2 (riboflavin)

oB3 (niacin)

oB5 (pantothenic acid)

oB6 group

oB7 (biotin)

oB8 (ergadenylic acid)

oB9 (folic acid)

oB12 (cyanocobalamin)

oVitamin A

oVitamin E

oVitamin D

oVitamin K

oCobalt

oBoron

oFluoride

oChromium

oIron

oCopper

oZinc

oManganese

oIodine

oSelenium

oMolybdenum

oPotassium

oCalcium

Great Sources of Micronutrients

How do you make sure you get plenty of micronutrients in your diet? First, cut out the junk food, since most junk food does not contain high amounts of important micronutrients. Second, focus on eating a wide variety of healthy foods. Some great foods to add to your diet to ensure that you get plenty of micronutrients to support your muscle building efforts include:

Fruits Fruits contain large amounts of important micronutrients, such as potassium, vitamin C, vitamin A, and more.

Veggies Veggies offer a wide range of micronutrients, from vitamin K to vitamin C.

Grains Grains are a great source of micronutrients, particularly if the whole grains include the endosperm, bran, and germ intact. Whole grains offer great micronutrients, such as selenium, magnesium, and B vitamins. For the most micronutrient intake, avoid refined grains, which remove many of the micronutrients by removing the germ and bran.

Dairy and Meat Animal based products, such as dairy products and meats, are a great source of micronutrients. Eggs, poultry, and fish provide iron, magnesium, zinc, vitamin E, and B vitamins. Dairy products offer vitamin D, potassium, and calcium.

Common Nutrition Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake #1 Not Getting Enough Calories

Mistake #2 Not Eating Enough Real Food Another big nutrition mistake to avoid when youre focusing on muscle building is not eating enough real food. Supplements to improve your micronutrient intake are great. Adding protein powders to your diet can help you to add more protein to your diet in an easy way. However, you need to make sure that youre eating plenty of real food. Try to focus on eating a real, whole food diet first. Then you can figure out where you need to add some supplements to fill in any nutritional gaps. Remember, supplements should only be an addition to your diet they shouldnt be replacements for your diet.

Mistake #3 Failing to Be Consistent Do you find yourself eating great, muscle-friendly meals on one day, and then the next day you have a tough time meeting your nutrition goals? Your body is going to show your inconsistencies. If you want real muscle building results, its essential to make sure that you follow a good nutrition plan consistently. The best way to improve your consistency is to start scheduling your meals for the day and planning what youre going to eat to make sure that you get all the nutrients that you need. Sporadic eating will make it difficult to see muscle gains and fat loss. Taking the time to do some planning in advance and sticking to your plan will make it easier for you to be consistent with your muscle building diet.

Mistake #4 Failing to Pay Attention to Pre and Post Workout Nutrition Dont make the mistake of failing to pay attention to your pre and post workout nutrition. Its easy to focus on your meals throughout the day, but you need to really think about what youll be eating right before you work out and right after you work out. If youre having a tough time seeing the muscle building results that you want, even when youre working out hard, you need to start paying attention to your nutrition right before and after you work out. Before you work out, make sure you have about 50-60 grams of complex carbs and 20-30 grams of healthy protein. Once youre done with your workout, fuel up with 40 grams of fast-acting protein and 50 grams of simple carbs, which you can get from a sports drink.

Mortgage advisers attempt to collect rent from neighbors after FBI raid in Union City, California

Friday, May 6, 2005

Three months after the FBI raided the offices of the Dorean Group in Union City, California, neighboring companies in the same office park have received letters claiming that rent for the office park should now be paid to the Dorean Group. The owner of the office park, Hanover Properties, insists that they have not sold the park and called the Dorean Group’s claim fraudulent.

The first letter from the Dorean Group, dated May 2nd, 2005, purported to “inform [the tenants] of the change in ownership of the property [the tenants] now occupy,” and asked that “payment of rents be sent” to the principals of the Dorean Group. The letter also included notarized documents authorizing the sale by an alleged agent of the current owner, Hanover Properties, a “Julia Pantibratyuk.”

On the subsequent day, Hanover Properties responded in a letter to the other tenants of the park. They noted that they had not sold the office park to the Dorean Group, but that they had evicted the Dorean Group from the premises on April 26. They added that, “We do not know who Julia Pantbratyuk[sic] is.”

The letters were provided to Wikinews reporter Pingswept by an employee of one of the companies in the office park.

Wikinews Shorts: December 7, 2008

A compilation of brief news reports for Sunday, December 7, 2008.

Officials say that progress is being made in a deal to bail out three United States carmakers. The U.S. government will be holding weekend talks on the plan after two days of Congressional hearings.

Dana Perino, the White House press secretary, stated that discussions with both parties had been “constructive”.

Executives from the three companies – General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler – have pleaded before two Congressional committees, asking for $34 billion in order to stop collapse.

“I’m convinced that by Sunday we will have an agreement that people can understand on this bill,” said Barney Frank, a representative from the state of Massachusetts.

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, said that Zimbabwe’s president Robert Mugabe must be forced out of office and face trial for his crimes against humanity.

“The time has come for Robert Mugabe to answer for his crimes against humanity, against his countrymen and women and for justice to be done. The winds of change that once brought hope to Zimbabwe and its neighbours have become a hurricane of destruction, with the outbreak of cholera, destitution, starvation and systemic abuse of power by the state,” said Sentamu.

Sentamu that the power-sharing deal that was signed by Mugabe and the Zimbabwean opposition in September was “now dead”.

Dr Sentamu’s statement comes after a severe cholera outbreak spread in Zimbabwe, and saw 12,545 cases reported and 565 people dead.
