People protest in Berlin against German Court overturning five-year rent cap

Saturday, April 17, 2021

On Thursday, Germany’s Federal Constitutional Court ruled a five-year rent freeze introduced earlier in February last year illegal due to lack of the Berlin Senate’s jurisdiction. This decision allowed rent to be increased as the Court ruling invalidated the previously introduced law which had capped the rent for about 90% of renters in the country. Protesters gathered in the capital city of Berlin with demonstrations against the ruling and against the possible increases in rent. Some demanded dispossessions of large real estate companies.

Protesters gathered in Berlin’s Neukölln and Kreuzberg districts, and reportedly thousands of people participated. The crowd reportedly walked from Hermannplatz towards Kottbusser Tor and then to Oranienplatz. Police closed several streets for the day. Organizers said 25 thousand people reportedly joined the protest, The Berlin Spectator reported.

Protesters marched with posters such as “You can have our hatred, You do not get our rent. (Housing is not a commodity.)” ((de))German language: ?unseren hass den konnt ihr haben, unsere miete bekomm ihr nicht (wohnenist keine ware) and “The rich should pay! (Social struggles connects [us].)” ((de))German language: ?die reichen sollen zahlen (soziale kämpfe verbinden). Some protesters brought lids of boiling of frying pans and made noise. The German word for lid is same as the one for rent cap. They reportedly chanted slogan “If you take a cover from us, we’ll come back with thousands.”.

The Social Democratic Greens and Left parties’ coalition previously introduced the rent cap through the country’s Senate in February last year, citing raising rent prices in the country. Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union alliance and the Free Democratic party had filed the appeal leading to the present ruling.

The overturned ruling by Berlin State Government had previously fixed the rent from February 2020 to February 2025 on its June 2019 level. A senator who was in charge of urban development, Sebastian Scheel, commented about his disappointment, and said either the federal government or any of the states now had an opportunity to create laws to control the rent.

New Zealand policewoman found moonlighting as prostitute

Thursday, July 20, 2006

An Auckland, New Zealand policewoman, who has not been named, has been working part-time as a prostitute. Her employer, Auckland City Police, did not know that she had been working as a prostitute for a limited time. She has been able to keep her police job.

Prostitution became legal in New Zealand in 2003.

The police officer was prostituting herself because of financial difficulties. A person working in the Christchurch sex industry said “It’s usually either for debts or drugs.”

She is now undergoing counselling.

The New Zealand Police would not comment on how long she had been acting as a prostitute.

Lyn Provost, Deputy Commissioner, said “the nature of the secondary employment was incompatible with policing and would never have been approved.”

The police say that if a police officer was to seek secondary employment then it must be signed off, this job hadn’t been. It would have been a conflict of interest.

Ron Mark, New Zealand First Party Law and Order spokesman, said “the case is concerning, because while prostitution is legal, it is associated with criminal activity.”

A representative of the New Zealand Prostitutes’ Collective (NZPC) said there were law students and doctors who were sex workers.

“NZPC’s philosophy is that we support people that are in that secondary employment … we support them for their sexual health needs or any other needs – emotionally, physically, spiritually – that we can accommodate.” a representative of the New Zealand Prostitutes’ Collective said.

Danish Integration Minister’s car burned

Wednesday, June 8, 2005

Copenhagen, Denmark – The Danish Integration Minister Rikke Hvilshøj’s car was set ablaze outside her family-home on the morning of Wednesday 8 June. From there, the fire spread to the family’s garage, and further on to the side of the house, damaging the roof above the kitchen and children’s room.

At the same time, an e-mail was sent to several media agencies, where a group calling themselves “Action Group Beate” claimed responsibility, saying it is a “protest against the racist immigrational laws of Denmark”. The police found the computer used for sending the mail within a few hours, and closed down the cybercafé whilst removing the computer.

Throughout the Danish political system politicians from both the ruling party and the opposition have expressed their outrage over the terrorism.

The insurance company is currently assessing the amount of damage done to the home, but so far they have made an estimate of £27.000, just for the house damages.

Two Story House Plans

By Preston Wood And Associates

Two Story Homes Give Homeowners Plenty of Options

Two story homes are enjoyed by families of any size. However, you won’t only find two story houses in the suburbs. Many people are deciding to build new homes within city limits that are ranging in size from cozy cottages to large modern designs. Pricing can also be a surprise to some. Two story homes can be cheaper to construct than one story homes when compared by square foot. Custom home designs are found in various prices since homeowners are able to have more of an input on what characteristics they want their home to display.

More Spacious Common Living Areas are found in Two Story Houses

You can easily create a two story home on a smaller plot of land without losing the interior space you want. Since you’re building on more than one level, you don’t have to find a piece of land that is large enough to handle each room to be spread out on one layer. Instead of having the rooms stretch out on a single level, two story houses give you the chance to place some rooms upstairs.

The most common trait two story floor plans have in common is to have bedrooms located on the upper floor. This creates a larger area on the first floor for entertaining guests and to accommodate regular living activities. Many floor plans will bring the master suite to the lower floor for various reasons. One benefit of doing this is that older adults are able to access their room easier than if it were located upstairs. Plus, older children and adults may enjoy the division of bedrooms so everyone has a better sense of privacy.

If you are interested in a certain residential style, you can usually incorporate it into a two story floor plan. Custom home builders are experienced to listen to your wants and needs so they can design your two story dream home. Designing a new two story floor plan can easily integrate various features from different home styles. Custom home designers will help you decide which qualities work best with others and will blend nicely together.

Two Story Homes can be Built Cheaper than Single Level Floor Plans

One great advantage to building a two story house is that it can be cheaper to construct than one story homes. This is because the materials for the upper floor are less expensive than those that are used for ground floors. Two story houses don’t need as much cement for the foundation, materials for the roof, or land to be excavated. When comparing prices to one story homes, the cost per square foot is less with two story buildings.

Two story houses have several reasons for why people all across the country are choosing them over single story houses. Since they don’t have to take up as much land, two story homes can be enjoyed within inner city limits. For those that want to stretch their dollar, spending less money per square foot may be the deciding factor. Building a custom two story home allows you to place each room strategically so that it fits your lifestyle; whether it’s for entertaining guests or to have an intimate setting for family.

British University academics vote for strike action

Saturday, February 18, 2006

University academics in the Association of University Teachers (AUT) and NATFHE unions in Britain have voted in favour of strike action in protest against academic salaries. The unions claim that academic pay has fallen 40 per cent in relative terms over the past 20 years and that employers have broken public promises to use extra government funding to improve pay.

Members were given the options of voting for strike action and also for ‘action short of a strike’. 64% of those who voted in the AUT, and 70% of the NATFHE members, voted for strike action. 81% of members voting in AUT, and 87% of NATFHE members, voted for action short of a strike. Turnout for AUT members was 51%, and turnout for NATFHE was 47%.

NATFHE general secretary Paul Mackney said, “This is a strong mandate for action and shows the level of dissatisfaction throughout higher education.” Speaking to the employers, he said that they must respond immediately with an offer – not talks about talks – if they are to prevent disruption. AUT general secretary Sally Hunt said, “University staff do not appreciate being lied to and today they have said that enough is enough.”

The Universities and Colleges Employers’ Association (UCEA) claimed that the ballot represented only a “small minority” of academic staff and offered ‘constructive negotiations’, but only if the threat of industrial action was dropped. Jocelyn Prudence, Chief Executive, said that they would seek to minimise any impact upon students.
