Wikinews interviews candidate for New York City mayor Vitaly Filipchenko

Wednesday, June 16, 2021

In early May, Wikinews extended an invitation to Vitaly Filipchenko, an independent candidate in the 2021 New York City mayoral election, set to take place November 2nd, alongside other candidates. Filipchenko answered some questions about his policies and campaign during a phone interview.

Filipchenko, registered on the New York City Campaign Finance Board as Vitaly A. Filipchenko, is the first Russian candidate for New York City mayor, being born in Tomsk, Siberia in 1973, according to news agency Sputnik. He has since naturalised as a United States citizen. According to the web site, Filipchenko has been educated in road construction and maintenance and owns a moving services company; he describes himself on his web site as a “small business owner”. On his web site’s platform page, he says that “[m]y English may not be perfect – but my platform is.”

Incumbent Democrat mayor Bill de Blasio, who won re-election in the 2017 New York City mayoral election by 66.5%, cannot run for a third term under term limits. As of April 28, 22 candidates are currently running, the majority of whom are also Democrats. Ahead of the June Democratic primary for New York City mayor, a poll conducted May 23 and 24 by WPIX and Emerson College of 12 Democratic candidates with a margin of error of 3.2 per cent has former commissioner for the New York City Department of Sanitation Kathryn Garcia and Borough President of Brooklyn Eric Adams leading with 21.1% and 20.1%, respectively.

Wikinews interviews biologist Chris Simon about periodical cicadas

Wednesday, June 12, 2013

In May, periodical cicadas with 17 years life cycle emerged on the East Coast of the USA after underground development as juveniles since 1996. Researchers and scientists worked to map and study the rare wave, and the locals prepared for the noisy event. First recorded in 1666, the Magicicada septendecim species recently emerged in 1979, 1996, this year, with a next wave due in 2030.

This week, Wikinews interviewed Chris Simon, an ecology and evolutionary biologist at University of Connecticut, about the cicadas.

((Wikinews)) What caused your initial interest in periodical cicadas?

Chris Simon: As an undergraduate student, I was interested in the formation of species so when I went to graduate school I looked for a study organism that was likely to be in the process of forming new species. I chose periodical cicadas because they are broken up into reproductively isolated broods (or year classes). Reproductive isolation leads to speciation so I planned to study biochemical differences among the broods.

((WN)) You study the emergence of the periodical cicadas. What do you study? What observations are you making?

CS: We record exactly where each cicada population emerges (using GPS automated mapping and crowd sourcing). We record the presence or absence of each of the three morphologically distinct species groups of periodical cicadas (Decim group, Cassini group, and Decula group). We collect specimens for DNA analysis. We look for cicadas coming up one and four years early and late. We dig up cicada nymphs and monitor their growth rates.

((WN)) What equipment do you use?

CS: Nets, shovels, automated GPS recorders, cameras, laptop computers, automated DNA sequencers.

((WN)) Do you study the periodical cicadas with anyone else? What is their role?

CS: Yes, there are a large number of people studying periodical cicadas in my lab and in other labs. My lab is made up of Research Scientists, Postdoctoral Researchers, a technician, graduate students, and undergraduates. Research Scientist John Cooley is the leader of the GPS mapping project; he invented the automated GPS recorder; he built our crowd-sourcing website, and he is instrumental in public outreach. Postdoctoral research David Marshall also participates in the mapping project and leads the part of the research related to the mapping of stragglers. John and Dave and Technician Kathy Hill all study periodical cicada mating behavior and conduct mating and hybridization experiments. One of my graduate students Beth Wade has participated in the nymph collections and will soon start genetic work involving genome wide association mapping designed to locate genes related to life cycle. My graduate student Russ Meister is studying the genes of the bacterial endosymbionts of cicadas. My current undergraduate honors student Erin Dwyer is also studying the development of Magicicada nymphs and is helping to design a lab exercise for college students around the eastern US to do the same. Many of my past undergraduate students have studied the biochemical genetics and development of periodical cicadas. See the Simon Lab website.
CS: We are collaborating with Teiji Sota at the University Kyoto and Jin Yoshimura at Shizuoka University in Japan. They are studying the phylogeography of Magicicada. We are collaborating with John McCutcheon of the University of Montana who is studying the endosymbiont genomes.
CS: We are also collaborating with ecologists Rick Karban and Louie Yang, both professors at UC Davis who have an interest in cicada population dynamics and nutrient cycling in the ecosystem.

((WN)) You studied the periodical cicadas in 1979 and 1996 too. What changes with time?

CS: I have studied periodical cicadas since I was a student back in 1974. What changes with time is increased human development constantly shrinking the patch size of cicada populations.

((WN)) What are your thoughts on the long life span of the periodical cicadas? Why could it be so? What advantages and what disadvantages does it have?

CS: Most or all cicadas have long life cycles compared to your typical annual insect. Examples have been found of two-year to 9-year cycles in different species. Periodical cicadas evolved an even-longer life cycle and I think that part of this relates to the evolution of their synchronized life cycles and peculiar safety-in-numbers strategy for survival. To become synchronized, periodical cicadas had to evolve an exact length life cycle and all adults would have to appear in the same year. Because the nymphs grow at different rates underground, a longer life cycle and a way of counting years must have evolved so that the individuals that get to the last nymphal (underground juvenile) stage first would wait long enough for all other individuals in the population to become ready to emerge.

((WN)) News reports mention this is ‘Brood II’ of the periodical cicadas. What are the distinctive features of this specific species and what is its full scientific name?

CS: The same species exist in multiple broods. No species is restricted to Brood II. The three species present in Brood II are: Magicicada septendecim, M. cassini, and M. septendecula. These same three species are found in every 17-year brood (except the farthest north which only has M. septendecim).

((WN)) At what depth do the cicadas juveniles live underground?

CS: Most live within the top foot of soil but some have been found deeper. We do not know if they go deeper in winter. We need to do much more digging to understand the nymphs.

((WN)) How do people prepare for the cicada emergence?

CS: Of course various people prepare in different ways. Ideally, everyone prepares by studying information available on the web (especially on our websites Magicicada Central and Magicicada.org).

((WN)) Do cicadas affect transport in the local area?

CS: No, not really. Occasionally individuals can be seeing flying across highways and sometimes they smash into cars.

((WN)) Do cicadas usually stay outside or do they also invade houses too?

CS: They stay outside. One might accidentally fly in through an open window but that would be rare.

((WN)) What do the cicadas eat?

CS: Cicadas suck xylem fluid (the watery fluid coming up from the roots of plants) in deciduous forest trees and herbs. Essential amino acids in the cicada diet are supplied by their bacterial endosymbionts. There are two species of endosymbionts. One makes 8 essential amino acids and one makes two essential amino acids.

((WN)) Do cicadas damage crops or city vegetation? What damage?

CS: Cicadas do not chew leave so they do not damage crops like other insects. They can inflict some damage by their egg laying. Cicadas lay eggs in pencil-sized tree branches. If there are not enough branches available, too many female cicadas may lay eggs in a single branch weakening it and making it susceptible to breakage by wind. This can sometimes cause damage in fruit orchards. If the branches break, the eggs die so this behavior is selected against by natural selection.

((WN)) Thank you.

CS: You’re welcome. I am happy to have this opportunity to communicate with your readers!

Fragrance Lampe Originated In 1800 France

By Bobbye Stone

A fragrance lampe is a great way to fill the home with all kinds of smells. There are several products that are available to cover or get rid of odors and each one has its good and bad qualities. This particular product was made popular in the 1800s in France. That makes perfect sense considering that France is the home of perfume. There are two models of these to choose from. The original kind will need to be lit to get it started, and the more modern kind is electric. There are a growing number of scents available. They have the kind that have a perfume type aroma and then they have some that smell like food or a favorite thing like the smell of leather.

The first patent for this catalytic fragrance lampe was made it 1897 by a Frenchman named Maurice Berger. He started his own company called Lampe Berger. It is still around today and is the worlds oldest company that produces them. Needless to say, the term lampe originated from the French language. No matter how it is spelled, the fact remains that it is a great way to make any room smell very pleasant. Although most people use a fragrance lampe as a household item, its origins come from hospitals and mortuaries because of its ability to disinfect and purify the air. For this reason, they are also ideal to use in households with pets or where cigar smoking is a hobby.

It has a simple design that has proven itself throughout the years. A wick is attached to a stone that heats up the oil which releases the sweet smells all through your house. The only maintenance you have to do is keep the oils filled up. The wick does have to ignited at first, but after the stone heats up to a sufficient temperature the flame goes out and the heat from the stone will do the rest of the work. This makes it considerably safer than candles. Candles do provide a nice glow and can have some great aromas, but it still utilizes an open flame which can be a risk to ones family and home. Candles are a common cause of many house fires today.

Luxury fragrance lampes have many advantages over the competition. As mentioned above, it is considered flameless because a flame only burns for a short period of time and then it extinguishes itself. That makes it safer for the whole family. The aroma does not fade away after so long the way candles and potpourri do. Aerosol cans fix the problem as long as you are standing directly within the area you sprayed, and they do not eliminate odors either, but just cover them up. Keep one of these effusion lamps filled and it will last forever. Plus, there is no worry about getting any spray in the mouth or eyes when spraying it into the air.

During the holidays the delicious smells of homemade pumpkin pie or gingerbread cookies can fill the air without actually having to cook anything. An effusion fragrance lampe provides hundreds of choices when it comes to scents. So whatever your preference, be sure to look for the largest selection at an online cigar shopfor obvious reasons.

The Green Party of Canada to elect new leader

Saturday, August 26, 2006

The Green Party of Canada will elect a new leader today. The new leader will replace Jim Harris, who stepped down after holding the position since 2003.

The candidates are:

May and Chernushenko, have emerged as frontrunners of the leadership race.

“We draw pretty much equally from across the entire political spectrum,” Jim Harris told CBC News. “If you were a Progressive Conservative, as I was, where do you go? The Green party supports Kyoto. We were opposed to the war in Iraq and yet at the same time we’re fiscally responsible. This is something that’s attractive to people.”

The Green party didn’t get any member elected in the January 23 general election, but the party did get about 4.5 per cent of the vote, enough to secure $1 million a year in federal funding.Chernushenko, an environmental consultant in Ottawa, got the most votes of any Green candidate.

Most Green party members have already cast their ballots by mail for the next leader.

May says that “her national profile and background as an adviser to the environment minister during Conservative Brian Mulroney‘s government are important for getting more Canadians interested in the party”. May referred to tackling climate change, urging electoral reform and ending Canada’s military mission in Afghanistan.

“I don’t really understand yet what she stands for. It’s a lot of rhetoric,” Globe and Mail columnist Jane Taber told CTV Newsnet.

“We will elect MPs by continuing to gain the trust and confidence of Canadians, and by reaching out to Canadians outside of our traditional base of support,” said Chernushenko. Chernushenko said the party should parachute star candidates into key ridings.

“Chernushenko sees a need for government regulation but wants to involve the private sector a bit more, and that’s consistent with Jim Harris’s ideas,” said Jonathan Malloy, political science professor at Ottawa’s Carleton University.

Jim Fannon, who spoke casually to the audience about his talents as a mediator, capable of bridging political gaps between the Greens, Liberals, Conservatives and New Democrats. Chernushenko says though he may not always be able to “wow” a crowd, he remains a strong communicator and team player. “I can’t do the rah-rah motivational thing, like Jim (Harris) did an incredible job at, but I can go very deep on complex issues and explain them in plain language,” he said Friday.

Josh Matlow of Earth Roots said: “Elizabeth May is someone I would want to lock myself to a tree with; David Chernushenko is someone I would want to discuss policy with; and Jim Fannon is someone I would go for a beer with”.

Political analysts consider May, a veteran envirnomental activist but also a newcomer to the party, to be the strong favourite to win the race against party stalwart Chernushenko.

How Dentists Ease Dentophobia

Submitted by: Chris Dodson

The fear of dentists is called by various names: dental phobia, odontophobia, dentophobia, dentist phobia, or dental anxiety. I prefer to use the word dentophobia, and it is a fairly common malady. Some would go see a dentist only after a severe toothache or infection. Needless to say, this prevents them from seeking appropriate dental consultation that could have saved their tooth. So many people who have dentophobia could have better teeth if only they could overcome their fear.

Specialized clinics that cater for patients with excessive dentophobia are very rare. Dentists who like to help their patients with dentophobia use psychological techniques to help them overcome their fears.

The most common technique, which is even used by dentists who simply don t want to smother their patients, is to have a dental chair that reclines to simulate lying on a bed in order to relax the patients. Relaxation is a great antidote to fear. Many of our fears are caused by excessive fatigue. Hence giving patients time to rest while they are undergoing dental treatment is probably the best way to overcome dentophobia. Many dental chair manufacturers have evolved their chair design to make patients feel comfortable while undergoing treatment. Treating patients at home is simply a way of increasing dental phobias. Most patients prefer going to a dental office rather than being treated at home.

Because dentophobia is quite prevalent, some dental writers have written books about it. P. Milgrom, P. Weinstein and T. Getz have collaborated to write an authoritative manual about it entitled Treating Fearful Dental Patients: A Patient Management Handbook (2nd Edition) published by the University of Washington s Continuing Dental Education. There is no end to topics when it comes to dentistry and dentists.

For patients who want to overcome their dentophobia, gradual exposure-therapy is usually employed. This involves exposing patients to repeated perceived dangers until they lose all their fears about it. Using a reward and punishment method, patients are rewarded when they show they can control their fear, or punished when they cannot control their fears. This is a drastic way of overcoming dentophobia but many people who would like to overcome their anxiety about dentists and dental treatment would be happy to undergo such treatment if it means getting rid of those fears.

Many progressive clinics realize that making the dental visit pleasant could reduce dentophobia to a great extent. Therefore they train their dentists to be particularly cognizant of such details. Dental companies that hire plenty of dentists train these dentists not to subject their patients to traumatic dental experiences. It not only reduces dentophobia, but also increases their profits, simultaneously making their dentists and their patients happy.

Other dental clinics just simply use pharmacological methods to cure or reduce the incidence of dentophobia. Psychological therapeutic methods are expensive and cannot be afforded by many dental patients they need a quick solution and the pharmaceutical companies can provide them with that.

Nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas ) is one of the most commonly used methods, which helps patients to relax while undergoing dental treatment. It is breathed in by patients and has immediate effect. Sometimes dentists use an oral sedative which helps patients calm their nerves while getting treatment, but unlike nitrous oxide, an oral sedative takes time to take effect.

Dentophobia will always be a problem in dental clinics but dental manufacturers and dentists are doing their best to find solutions to dentophobia trouble so that patients can enjoy better dental health something that is hindered when patients are fearful of visiting a dentist.

Kentucky lawmaker in critical condition after fight in high school cafeteria

Saturday, April 16, 2011

One of Kentucky’s newest state lawmakers, who also serves as a high school teacher, sustained a critical head injury Tuesday morning while intervening to break up a fight between two students in the school’s cafeteria.

State Representative DeWayne Bunch (R), 49, was listed in “extremely critical” condition when he was taken to the Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin, Kentucky, immediately following the fight between two male teens.

Bunch was reported as being unconscious and bleeding from the ears when emergency responders arrived at Whitley County High School.

The fight, between a fifteen- and sixteen-year-old, was caught by a surveillance camera which showed Bunch being punched by the sixteen-year-old, according to the sheriff. It is not clear what started the fight, which took place in the school’s cafeteria during breakfast.

The teens have been charged with one count of first-degree assault and two counts of third-degree assault. They are both in custody at a juvenile detention center according to the sheriff.

Bunch was later transported to University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky. His family has requested no information be publicly released about his condition.

Australian Jesse Williams drafted in fifth round by the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks

Monday, April 29, 2013

Sunday, the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks drafted Brisbane, Australia native nose tackle Jesse Williams in the fifth round of the NFL Draft. Going into the draft, there were some expectations by the Brisbane Times and other media outlets that Williams might be selected in the first round. Injuries, which resulted in Williams being unable to participate fully in the NFL Combine, likely were reasons why he was not selected higher.

Gridiron football is not the most popular football code in Australia, with rugby league, rugby union, soccer, and Australian rules football all being more popular participation sports. Williams’ youth sporting career reflected this, with Williams playing rugby union until he was 15 years old at which time he switched codes and joined the local gridiron team, the Bayside Ravens. A year later, his playing ability earned him a scholarship offer from the University of Hawaii. He could not meet the university’s academic standards so eventually he attended Western Arizona Community College instead. In 2011, he transferred to the University of Alabama and played for the Alabama Crimson Tide for two seasons. Both seasons, his Crimson Tide team won the national championship.

Williams’ selection is unique amongst Australians as most Australians who have played in the NFL have been kickers. He is also only the second Australian ever to be drafted in the NFL Draft.

10 Secret Tips From Divorce Attorneys In Fredericksburg VA to Get The Best Property Settlement Agreement

Divorce In Fredericksburg Virginia does not have to end in a fire sale of your assets. There are ways to split up that preserve the value of your holdings and leave at least one part of the relationship unscathed.

Dividing your marital property because of a divorce in Virginia doesn’t have to mean hosting a fire sale and then splitting the meager proceeds afterward. There are strategies that preserve the value of property and leave a lot more money in the pockets of the former couple. Yes, it takes civility and cooperation, but most people are willing to participate when they realize the effect on the bottom line.

Just read the Ten Secret Tips offered by Divorce Attorneys in Fredericksburg Virginia.

1. Don’t sell if it’s a depressed market. There is no need to dump property in a bad market just to finalize the settlement. Make arrangements to store and insure tangibles such as art, furniture and even an extra auto. Even real estate, time-shares and apartments can be “kept in the family” until the time is right to sell. A property manager can be a neutral party while the house is rented. A partnership agreement that dictates how disputes, over such things as whether or not to accept a price or when to place the item on the market, should be incorporated into the settlement and become part of the divorce decree. That makes it enforceable before the same judge that granted the divorce, without the need to sue for breach of contract.

2. What to do when it’s hard to know ‘fair value.’ Couples often own property that could appreciate, but is of little current value. It could be a work by a new artist, a fledgling company or an invention. The solution is to keep the fledgling property and agree to an evaluation every year or so. After a chance for appreciation, the property can be sold and the proceeds split. If one party gets impatient or believes that the other is holding onto the property in order to hold onto the relationship, a mediation clause can force a sale.

3. Use your insurance to protect your rights. An often-overlooked aspect of holding property after a divorce is proper insurance coverage. Insurance is a contract, and both parties should own the policy. If the policy lapses, both should be notified and either have the right to pay the premium or sue for reimbursement. The company doesn’t care about the relationship of the parties to each other. It will only issue the policy in the name of the legal owners. By applying jointly, the parties have agreed that both have a legal interest in the item.

4. Offer installment buyouts. If one party offers to buy the other out, the terms should be similar to those of an arm’s-length transaction between strangers. All the usual safeguards, such as continued ownership until final payment, or a security agreement, mortgage or other recorded lien must be executed.

5. Create family limited partnerships. FLIPs are a practical and, in my opinion, underused form of ownership in divorce situations. Under the Uniform Family Limited Partnership Act, adopted in most states and recognized under the Internal Revenue Code, one former spouse can be named the general partner with all the rights to control the asset. Both former spouses are named as limited partners with beneficial ownership of the asset. Tax consequences flow onto their individual returns. The FLIP can provide for a salary or stipend to the general partner for his or her management efforts.

The title to the asset is in the name of the FLIP, and neither can dispose of the asset without the other’s consent. The document can provide for distribution of the proceeds, can give a termination date and can even state what happens to the property if one person dies. In this way, probate is avoided and no will is necessary.

6. Set up a divorce trust. A similar result can be achieved by transferring the property to a trust, but the tax consequences are different. A trust is a separate tax unit with its own tax bracket. The trustee is often an outsider, such as a lawyer, if tax benefits are to be reaped. The disadvantage, compared with a FLIP, is that the trustee typically charges a fee. The advantage is realized when the parties want more of an arm’s-length transaction, in which neither spouse has more control. The trustee is the fiduciary of both parties and can be held accountable if one is favored above the other.

7. Create non-voting shares in your family-related business. A quick sale is not the only thing that can devalue good property. Uncle Sam can take a bite, too. The transfer of property under a divorce decree is not a taxable event. Business property poses a problem if shares are sold to a stranger or other family member to buy out the non-active spouse. A better idea may be to allow the former spouse to keep shares in the company, but make them non-voting. The active ex-spouse runs the business and is an officer and director. The inactive ex-spouse keeps his or her rights intact with non-voting shares equal to the percentage specified in the settlement.

8. Substitute one asset for another. Occasionally, it’s necessary to give up non-marital property to make the division fair and equitable. For example, if a stock is down in price and one person wants to keep more than half of the shares, then that person will need to offer a substitute asset. It’s appropriate to offer other property, such as inheritances, gifts or property, to make the deal.

9. Create an objective index. One of the biggest stumbling blocks to the orderly preservation of wealth is the fear of the supported spouse that he or she will need the cash that’s tied up in the property. Another problem arises when one party (or both) distrusts the other to actually sell the property at the right time. Enter the objective index.

The parties can agree to liquidate if the cost-of-living index as defined in the agreement reaches a certain level, or if one loses a job or suffers a salary decrease. Or they can agree that stocks or other securities will be sold when the stock reaches a certain price or if a market index, such as the S&P 500, reaches a certain level.

10. Transfer assets to your children. I’ll never forget the day that a New York Superior Court judge awarded custody of a house in a divorce settlement to the litigant’s 8-year-old son. It created quite a stir. The boy stayed put while the parents were shunted from one home to another. It worked to save the house, the boy’s lifestyle and forced two feuding adults to put the child first.

The point: You can choose to transfer specific assets to your children as a means to ensure the property is distributed fairly and your dependents are cared for properly. Or, you could wait and let the judge in Fredericksburg Virginia do it for you.
