Abu Ghraib prison camp struck by tractor bomb

April 5, 2005

A suicide tractor bombing struck the American held Abu Ghraib prison camp Monday, the 2nd attack in two days. Four Iraqi civilians are reported wounded.

The explosion occurred near the gates to the prison camp, and comes on the heels of a large attack earlier on Saturday, where both US soldiers and Iraqi detainees were injured. The apparent motive of the Saturday attack was to free detainees.

The New York Times reports that an official of the Interior Ministry said a letter was written by a woman who claims to be a detainee at the prison. In the letter, she reportedly begs to have the prison attacked to save her from the dishonor of rape by her American captors. The letter was circulated among Sunni mosques.

An internet posting by the Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi claims responsibility for both the Abu Ghraib attacks. The Al Qaeda militant group also claimed responsibility for the first attack.

The report of the tractor bombing came as military officials were announcing that a short riot broke out Friday in another American prison called Camp Bucca. Rocks were thrown and tents set on fire during a protest over several prisoners who were being transferred. Four guards and twelve prisoners were injured.

The Camp Bucca facility holds about 6,000 detainees, while Abu Ghraib holds 3,300.

Five Years In Review: The Minneapolis Real Estate Market}

Five Years in Review: The Minneapolis Real Estate Market

by

Kevin CurtisPoised on top of the real estate mountain in 2003, it’s hard to imagine so much change in the Minneapolis real estate market in the last five years. While the bubble has certainly burst and it’s no longer a seller’s market, key elements like long-term value of Minneapolis real estate as an investment and the quality of life available to residents has not changed. Even after five years of change, the world of Minneapolis real estate is still a great place to buy a home for you and your family.2003 was a banner year for the housing market across the United States. In Minnesota, 39,440 people were gainfully employed in the real estate and rental industries with a combined annual payroll exceeding $1,237,000,000. Clearly, real estate was lucrative for sales professionals involved in the booming market. Sellers benefited from bidding wars over their homes. Houses could not be built fast enough to meet the exceptional demand for homes in the market.Over the next two years, the strength of the economy and the housing market caused lenders to start granting adjustable rate mortgages and larger mortgages than people could actually afford. Lending practices got very loose as bankers were caught up in the housing market frenzy. Add the risky business of real estate speculation to the equation and it soon became clear that some of the growth in the housing market was built on shaky ground.Builders and lenders wanted to continue the exponential growth of years past, and by 2006, it was clear that far too many new homes were sitting on the market unsold. New home building slowed to a stop by 2007, and because builders could not get new homes sold, the value of homes across the country started to drop. Analysts called it price adjustment for the over inflated selling prices of years past, but homeowners simply saw it as less value in their investments.Once the dust settled in 2008, however, homeowners realized that although their homes had lost a bit of value, their homes were still solid investments. Compared with the performance of stocks and 401Ks, home equity was a solid place to put hard earned money for those willing to keep homes until the economy began to pick up speed. While the past five years in Minneapolis real estate have been filled with drama, one thing a smart investor realizes: current prices in the housing market make this the ideal time to buy. Houses and condos that were once out of reach financially are now less expensive and ready to be purchased. In addition, the influx of one-time homeowners that now want to rent homes instead of paying over-inflated and financially dangerous mortgages makes this the ideal time to venture into rental property ownership. Rentals are a great way to invest and make money in the current economy. The future is anyone’s guess, but one thing is certain: Minneapolis real estate is one of the best ways to invest in your future. Over the long haul, it’s sure to pay off; thanks to the strength and bright future of the city’s schools, commerce and the entrepreneurial spirit of its residents.

Zeus botnet trojan horse is back

Saturday, April 24, 2010

Trusteer, a web security company, reports that a trojan horse virus called Zeus can steal online banking details from infected computers. The virus has infected one out of every 3,000 computers of the 5,500,000 million which the company monitors in the United States and the United Kingdom.

The trojan can infect users of Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer on Microsoft Windows, and steals login information by recording keystrokes when the machine connects to certain websites, usually banks or other financial institutions. The stolen data is transmitted to a remote server and sold to cyber-criminals. “We expect this new version of Zeus to significantly increase fraud losses, since nearly 30% of Internet users bank online with Firefox and the infection is growing faster than we have ever seen before,” said Amit Klein, chief technology officer at Trusteer, to BBC.

The trojan has also affected Wikinews users, including Brian McNeil, who is the founder of Wikinewsie, a restricted-access wiki used to collaborate on sensitive news reports. McNeil reported on his userspace: “On Saturday [April] 17, a Windows-based PC in the house issued a cry for help, the Avira package running on the system had just detected a piece of malware; full scans indicated several known pieces of malware and numerous hidden files. Additional scans revealed that all but one of the USB memory sticks and portable hard drives in the house were infected with something. The Zeus botnet, as it turned out.” E-mail accounts for accredited reporters have also been affected.

Taliban publicize video of captured U.S. soldier Bowe Bergdahl

Monday, July 20, 2009

On Saturday, the Taliban released a video showing Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl, the U.S. solider captured in Paktika, Afghanistan on June 30. In the film, Bergdahl, of Ketchum, Idaho, is shown eating a meal cross-legged on the floor. He appears clothed in a grey shalwar khameez, with a shaved head. In the presence of his jailers, he states, “I have a very, very good family that I love back home in America, and I miss them every day that I’m gone. I miss them and I’m afraid I might never see them again and that I’ll never be able to tell them I love them again.” He says he is frightened and asks that the United States, “Please, please bring us home so we can be back where we belong and not over here […]”; U.S. sources have argued that this statement was made under duress.

The events leading to Bergdahl’s abduction remain somewhat unclear. Taliban commander Mulvi Sangeen claimed that Bergdahl had gone to a military post on his own, became intoxicated, and was ambushed on the way back to his vehicle. The U.S. military has dismissed this; an anonymous source said, “The Taliban are known for lying and what they are claiming (is) not true.” In the video, Bergdahl himself says he had been taken after falling behind on patrol. Anonymous U.S. officials continue to state that he simply left his remote base unarmed on his own. U.S. sources believe that after being captured, Bergdahl was sold up the chain, eventually to a clan leader, Siraj Haqqani.

His family is praying for his, “safe return to his comrades and then to our family.” Meanwhile, Navy Lt. Robert Carr, a spokesman for the U.S. military in Afghanistan, says the U.S. is “continuing to do everything possible to recover the soldier and are using all available assets to get him back safely and unharmed.” Retired Army Maj. Gen. Bill Nash predicts that U.S. forces will act on several fronts, including intelligence-gathering and counter-insurgency operations. Already, U.S. forces have begun dropping two sets of pamphlets, one stating, “One of our American guests is missing. Return the guest to his home.” and the other, “If you do not release the U.S. soldier then […] you will be hunted.” The mayor of Ketchum has said that, “As the mayor, I can say this is a community situation. […] I trust the leadership of this country, the wisdom of the people who are serving and the decisions that led up to the situation.”

Bill Gates releases mosquitoes during conference for malaria awareness

Thursday, February 5, 2009

Bill Gates, the founder of computer software company Microsoft, tried to bring attention to malaria while speaking at the TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conference on Wednesday February 4 in Long Beach, California. He did so by releasing a “swarm” of mosquitoes from a jar, into the crowd.

“Malaria is spread by mosquitoes. I brought some. Here I’ll let them roam around. There is no reason only poor people should be infected,” said Gates as he opened the jar. After waiting a minute, Gates then stated that the mosquitoes were not infected with the disease.

“There is more money put into baldness drugs than into malaria. Now, baldness is a terrible thing and rich men are afflicted. That is why that priority has been set,” said Gates jokingly.

The prank was first reported by Dave Morin, Facebook’s manager, on the social networking and micro-blogging site Twitter. Morin stated that “Gates just released mosquito[e]s into the audience at TED and said: ‘Not only poor people should experience this,'” followed by a smiley face.

Gates donated nearly US$170 million to the PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative in September 2008 to fund research to fight malaria, and develop a vaccine.

The TED conference, held annually, features, among other things, the latest in technology, science, and politics. People who have previously spoken at the conference include former United States president Bill Clinton and former vice president Al Gore.

Condado De Alhama Golf Resort}

Condado De Alhama Golf Resort

by

David Craythorne

For some of the finest golf courses in Europe, and one of the best climates in the world, there really is only one location to buy a Polaris World golf property and that’s Murcia, Spain. And if you’re choosing a golf resort here why not opt for the largest resort so far at Condado de Alhama. At 9 million square metres this resort is larger than the other Polaris World golf resorts put together and once complete will possess three Jack Nicklaus designed golf courses. There is no better time to have a look at what this resort has to offer as a new town centre was finished in July 2009 adding more first rate facilities to what is already one of the best resorts in the world.

Condado de Alhama Golf Resort

The Polaris World Condado de Alhama golf resort is in the Valle del Guadalentn area of Murcia, Spain. Situated in the foothills of Sierra Espuna and Carrascoy-El Valle, two regional nature reserves, the resort is divided into three areas: Los Jardines de Alhama, Los Naranjos de Alhama and La Isla del Condado.

Los Jardines de Alhama

Translated this means ‘The Gardens of Alhama’ and the area, as you would suppose, is spacious and green with properties built around landscaped gardens and swimming pools. The Los Jardines development is pedestrianised with dedicated cycle lanes enabling residents to walk or cycle around the parks and enjoy the extensive variety of plant life. Los Jardines de Alhama is very family friendly with its separate play areas for children and it also has first-rate sports facilities including tennis courts, football pitches and basketball courts. The properties are built in a traditional Mediterranean style with architecture that blends in effortlessly with the manicured surroundings.

Los Naranjos de Alhama

‘Naranjos’ is the name given to a native orange tree of the region and this area of Condado de Alhama is lined with the attractive tree on its streets, within its gardens and around its squares. Los Naranjos is in the heart of the golf resort and once had its own town centre called El Agora. This town centre has been extended to include the new resort town centre called El Foro providing an even bigger collection of facilities just a short walk away along the leafy avenues. Properties in Los Naranjos have a stepped architectural design and the penthouses look out onto the Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course (under construction – due for completion in December 2009).

La Isla del Condado

Condado de Alhama translated means ‘Alhama County’ which is where the resort is situated in Murcia. La Isla del Condado means ‘The Island of the County’ and this area is an apartment complex on an island on the lake in the centre of the golf resort. La Isla is a waterfront setting that stretches down to the main town centre of El Foro. Residents benefit from stunning views from their apartments across the lake as well as three infinity pools that give the impression of being part of the lake itself. La Isla has tranquil boulevards and green spaces that incorporate children’s play areas. Around the lake are several piers from which a ferry service runs to the town centre.

El Foro & El Oasis Town Centre

The focus of activity at the Condado de Alhama golf resort is within the El Foro and El Oasis town centres. El Foro means ‘The Forum’ and this vast 12,000 square metre complex includes the relocated El Agora town centre which initially served the Los Naranjos complex. Designed in a Hispanic-Arabic style around a courtyard with a large central water feature, the El Foro town centre is due to open this month (July 2009) and along with the 60,000 square metre El Oasis town centre provides bars, restaurants, banks, stores, supermarkets, hairdressers, launderettes, pharmacies, restaurants, cinemas and healthcare services to residents.

US unemployment rate reaches 9.4 percent

Friday, June 5, 2009

Data from the United States Labor Department says that the unemployment rate in the U.S. has reached its highest level in over 25 years, namely 9.4%.

The job loss rate, however, was only 345,000, which is the lowest monthly job loss rate since September of last year. Analysts had predicted that the loss could be as high as 525,000.

The news suggests that the US economy may be improving, as the job loss rate, which peaked at 741,000 jobs this January, has started to ease.

“Even as we see things start to stabilize and hopefully grow again, we do know that unemployment tends to lag, and so that the unemployment rate is going to be high and probably stay high for a while, precisely because that is sort of the normal pattern as we come out of recession,” said an economic adviser for the White House, Christina Romer.

Since the recession officially started in December 2007, the economy has shed over six million jobs, with 14.5 million residents now unemployed.
