Reflections, Lichtenstein, two new exhibitions at Edinburgh’s Modern One

Saturday, March 14, 2015

This weekend saw the opening of two new exhibitions at Edinburgh’s National Gallery of Modern Art. Wikinews attended Thursday’s press preview for the event where a full contingent of the capital’s press turned out to see the striking collection of paintings, photographs, and other works. Presented below are a selection of images captured at the preview.

REFLECTIONS: A Series of Changing Displays of Contemporary Art, billed as a showcase of a “diverse range of internationally-renowned contemporary and modern artists” is to display major works from the Gallery’s permanent collection, alongside important loans. Alongside this broad range of works, a three-room display of pieces on-loan from the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation — with a dramatic painted steel relief, ‘borrowed’ from the Tate in London — runs from March 14 through to January 10 next year.

Admission to both exhibitions is free; being located in Dean, to the north-west of Edinburgh’s city centre, a free Gallery bus service is available.

Second Darwin’s sandwich shop opens in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA

Thursday, June 2, 2005

Darwin’s Ltd. opened a second location of their sandwich shop at 1613 Cambridge Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in late May. It is situated across from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. Previously limited to one location at 148 Mount Auburn Street, the second store seats approximately 30 people and sells sandwiches, coffee drinks, locally made pastries, as well as some produce and snack foods. The establishment also provides free wireless access through the WanderingWifi service. The shop plays music during the day; during this reporter’s visit to the shop, selections played ranged from David Bowie to The Strokes. The store is air-conditioned.

Key differences between the original store and the new one include the unification of the cafe and the sandwich line now behind one counter, handicap accessible restrooms, no beer or wine sold at location, and a lack of a loyal customer base. Although the recent months have been slow, business is expected to pick up with the return of Cambridge area students this autumn.

While the original location of Darwin’s was recently cited for lacking sneeze guards before the kitchen counter, according to the Cambridge Chronicle, the new Darwin’s has acrylic sheets along the front of their sandwich counter. The original Darwin’s has installed the sneeze guard at the kitchen counter the day following citation.

No Time To Mow The Lawn? Hire A Landscaping Company In Norfolk

byAlma Abell

People love to have beautiful yards, however many don’t have the time to spend mowing the lawn, pruning trees or tending flower gardens. They also don’t have the skills or machinery to install water features and walkways. Southern Roots Landscaping of VA has been helping homeowners with these tasks for over 55 years. They provide all of the Landscaping in Norfolk services that a homeowner could need. This includes lawn services, landscaping and garden services and constructing water features. They can meet with homeowners to create a customized program to maintain the yard and garden and add new landscape features.

For many homeowners Landscaping in Norfolk begins with a beautiful lawn. Installing sod is the first step in the process. In just a few weeks, the homeowner can see a vacant lot filled with dirt and mud transformed into a lush green carpet. The soil will be pre-treated with fertilizer and soil enhancements to allow the sod to easily connect with it. Landscapers who understand the Virginia climate will be able to recommend the correct mowing schedule. They will also know the right height for the grass to allow moisture to penetrate, but prevent the sun from burning it. Throughout the year they will edge paths, fertilize and rake leaves. The lawn will always look neat and well-maintained.

Mature trees add a lot to the character of a home. Properly positioned trees can shade the home in the summer and help lower energy bills. In the winter, they lose their leaves and let in needed light and solar heat. Large trees can be difficult for homeowners to prune and maintain. Professional landscapers have bucket trucks that allow them to easily and safely reach the highest branches. Certified arborists know the best time of they year to prune trees. It’s best to prune disease-prone trees, when they are dormant.

Water features such as ponds and fountains create a soothing environment. Landscaping in Norfolk that includes these elements creates a tranquil setting for homeowners to enjoy. A professional landscape company can show the homeowner the best place to put these in their yard. They can also install and maintain them. All the homeowner has to do is enjoy them and the beauty of their yard.

John Constable painting location mystery solved after 195 years

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

The mystery of the location of a viewpoint used by English painter John Constable has been solved, after nearly 200 years. The Stour Valley and Dedham Church was painted in Suffolk, England, between 1814 and 1815, but changes to the landscape meant that the spot he chose was not known, despite the best efforts of historians and art experts.

Now the puzzle has been answered. Martin Atkinson, who works for the National Trust as property manager for East Suffolk, used clues from the painting and looked at old maps to track down the viewpoint. Trees had grown, a hedgerow had been planted and boundaries had moved or disappeared, but Atkinson eventually worked out where Constable had stood. He said, “When I discovered that I had worked out the location where Constable painted this particular masterpiece, I couldn’t believe it. All the pieces of the jigsaw finally fitted together.”

Atkinson used an 1817 map of East Bergholt, where Constable grew up, as a reference point, but found that the view would have changed not long after the painting was completed. “The foreground didn’t fit at all, it was quite unusual as we know Constable painted it in the open air so he would have been standing in the scene. The hedgerow in his work no longer exists and there’s another hedgerow that runs across the scene today which wasn’t there. When you stand on the road on which he would have stood, and use the oak tree as a reference point, you see the same view. It’s great to see where an old master stood – and be inspired by the same view,” he said.

Suffolk, where Constable painted many of his finest paintings, is often called “Constable country”. Most, but not all, of the locations that Constable depicted are known. The picture is now housed in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts.

David S. Touretzky discusses Scientology, Anonymous and Tom Cruise

Wednesday, February 6, 2008

David S. Touretzky, prominent free speech activist and critic of Scientology, discussed his opinions on the recent Internet backlash against the Church of Scientology in an interview with former Scientologist and Wikinews reporter Nicholas Turnbull. The recent conflict on the Internet between critics of Scientology and the Church has been spurred on in declarations by a nebulous Internet entity using the name Anonymous that the Church of Scientology “will be destroyed”. Anonymous has directed recent protests at Scientology centres across the world, which have attracted significant numbers of individuals supporting the cause. In recent e-mail correspondence with Wikinews, a representative of the Church of Scientology declared that the Church considers the activities of Anonymous to be illegal, and that Anonymous “will be handled and stopped”.

Touretzky, a research professor in artificial intelligence and computational neuroscience at Carnegie Mellon University, has been a prominent critic of the Church of Scientology since mid-1995, and has been protesting against Scientology vociferously since then; he has also run websites that publish material that Scientology wishes to keep suppressed from the public eye, such as extracts from Scientology’s formerly-confidential Operating Thetan (OT) materials. Touretzky views the actions of the Church of Scientology as being “a threat to free speech”, and has endured harassment by the Church of Scientology for his activities.

The Church of Scientology continues to suffer damage to its public reputation through increased exposure on the Internet and vocal protests by Scientology critics such as Prof. Touretzky. A recent event that focused intense attention on Scientology’s totalitarian attitude was the leak of an internal Church of Scientology propaganda video to the Internet video sharing site YouTube, in which celebrity Scientologist Tom Cruise spoke heavily in Scientology’s jargon and stated that that “we [Scientology] are the authorities” on resolving the difficulties of humanity. The declaration of war by Anonymous followed shortly after this leak, in the form of a video posted to the Internet.

The ongoing dispute, cast by some as Scientology versus the Internet, brought Scientology terms such as “SP” (Suppressive Person, an enemy of Scientology) and “KSW” (Keeping Scientology Working) into general usage by non-Scientologists from the late 1990s onwards; increased attention has been drawn to Scientology by the release of the Cruise video in addition to media coverage. This focus has caused an even greater propagation of these terms across the outside world, as Touretzky comments in the interview.

Wikinews asked Prof. Touretzky about the impact that the activities of Anonymous will have on Scientology, the public relations effect of the Tom Cruise video, the recent departure of individuals from the Church of Scientology’s executive management, the strategies that Anonymous will employ and Touretzky’s experiences of picketing the Church.

Why You Should Get Furnace Repair In Bolingbrook In The Summer

byadmin

Having the furnace go out is no fun in any place, but in a cold area like Bolingbrook, Illinois, it’s an absolute disaster. At some times of the year, you could even freeze to death. Even in the spring or fall, it would be very uncomfortable not to have any heat in such a cold climate.

Because of this, most people who order Furnace Repair Bolingbrook in the winter are hoping to receive immediate service. Temperatures in the 30s and lower definitely motivate someone to get the furnace fixed! Unfortunately, this is the very time of year when everyone else is thinking the same thing. That means that the furnace repair companies will be swamped in orders and will be unlikely to be able to get to everyone in a short period of time.

To avoid the prospect of being left in the cold, it’s a better idea to call for furnace repair in the spring and summer. Hardly anyone thinks about having a furnace fixed when it’s in the 70s or 80s outside. Not only does this mean that you will probably be able to get a repairman out almost immediately, you may even get a deal on the service thanks to the lack of overall business.

Spring and summer are also great times to have your furnace checked out. A checkup can spot emerging problems before they cause the furnace to fail. Furnace Repair Bolingbrook companies know what to look for when they perform this service. Sometimes, they can take care of certain issues in the same visit. Dirty filters, clogged burners, and other such problems are simple for a qualified person to fix. Other repairs can be fixed on a return visit. This return visit will likely occur very quickly thanks to the lack of other jobs at this time of year.

When you look for a furnace repair firm, try checking the Internet for reviews. This will help you find the highest-rated companies to do the work. You may even find that there are repair and maintenance experts that you didn’t even know about. Soon, you’ll have your furnace taken care of and you won’t have to worry about what will happen when it gets cold again.

Mats Hummels completes Bayern signing

Thursday, May 26, 2016

On Monday, German football club FC Bayern Munich completed the signing of Mats Hummels, who captained Bayern’s rivals Borussia Dortmund this past season. 27-year-old defender Hummels, who was an academy player at Bayern before moving to play for Borussia Dortmund, agreed to a five-year deal.

I’m looking forward to everything that awaits me at FC Bayern. I’m very excited.

Hummels underwent medical tests on Monday before signing the contract. Bayern’s chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said “We’re delighted to welcome Mats back to FC Bayern, […] Not only are we strengthening our squad with a world-class centre-back, but also with a player who accepts responsibility and who is our own youth product. First of all we wish him a successful Euro 2016.”

Hummels joined the Bavarians in 1995 when he was six years old. He played only one Bundesliga match for the Reds before he was loaned to Dortmund and later signed for them. He played his last game for Borussia Dortmund on Saturday in the DFB-Pokal Cup final, which Bayern won 4–3 on penalties.

After the signing was completed, he said “Saying goodbye to Dortmund was difficult for me of course. It was similar to 2008, when it was the other way around […] Now I’m looking forward to everything that awaits me at FC Bayern. I’m very excited.”

2008 YODEX Review: Varied competitions, Vast creations

Monday, May 26, 2008

The 27th Young Designers’ Exhibition 2008, recognized by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) as the largest show of student creations, recently ended Sunday May 18. It was held at the Taipei World Trade Center. Improvements and expansions were seen with 107 academical and industrial units. Different design competitions participated and showcased their products and also received awards.

It’s no doubt that companies related to design and cultural industries want to discover creative talents from academical units in this exhibition. However, most companies still try to showcase different conceptional and applicative products in order to promote Taiwan’s designs into the world market. A typical example is Fora Series, a photo-voltaic product series by the Tsann Kuen Trans-nation Group.

Before entering into their careers, students participated in this show and showcased varied styles that differ from the usual industrial businesspeople. To get more opportunities and in order to interact with the design and cultural industries, students also participated in vast competitions and tried to get the top places. Some students also tried to design conceptional products in conjunction with industrial designs, especially in some design competitions.

In summary, not only did the 2008 YODEX, have companies which can discover talents and showcase achievements of industrial design in the exhibition, but students can make their stages to showcase excellences from their creations in several competitions related to YODEX.

It is a right of lenders to ask for security as business finance contains massive amount. However, this formula or rule does not contain any option for tenants and non-homeowners. Being tenant does not mean that you do not have entrepreneurial skills. In order to provide equal opportunity to every person, lenders are offering unsecured business loans. As the name refers, these financial services have been designed especially for UK citizens to start up or expand business. Without depositing any security to loan providers, individual can grab cash in the range of 5000- 75000. However, these finances can be used only for commercial purposes, like purchasing raw material, land, office space, factory, equipments, technology, furniture, etc.

Unsecured business loans can be availed easily by submitting one short and simple online application form. Please keep in mind that you should have proper business plan and blue-print if you are looking for money for new business. Generally, banks approve application of existing business holders easily because they can borrow money by showing past balance sheet and profit/loss statement.
